It explains her views and feelings as she learns about the inmates, their lives, how the staff interacts with the inmates and each other. This book is wonderful with vivid scenes and memorable characters. This book is real, honest and opens your mind to what happens in prisons. It's explains inmates real feelings, thoughts and actions while in prison and before they were incarcerated.I could not stop reading this book as I wanted to learn more and hear more of the stories told in this book.I would recommend this book to everyone. It's a real life account of the authors everyday life as she works in a prison to help and teach inmates.

And trying to feel not only what she was going through, but also what the prisoners are going through, is a very hard and sad situation. And knowing that she is right, God does know what he is doing at all times, you are put through and put in situations for a reason. PLEASE, please, if you get a chance, read this book, not only for inspiration, but to also remind us all of how lucky we are, especially for the little things in life. :)

How to Win at High School, by Owen Matthews

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—As a junior transfer student, Adam Higgs is just another high school loser. Influenced by his younger sister and older brother's high school popularity and wanting to make up for a tragic accident, Adam pulls inspiration from Scarface's Tony Montana in his quest to become one of the "gods" of Nixon Collegiate. Adam's first step to popularity is a job at Pizza Hut to earn money for stylish clothes and the nickname of "Pizza Man." After a few missteps, Adam climbs the social ladder while making money doing homework assignments for the popular kids. Throughout the book, the teen raises his stakes by going to a clubs, getting a pretty girlfriend, hiring a team of loser nerds to assist with his increasingly popular homework business, selling fake IDs, going to parties, selling pills, and abusing drugs and alcohol. All the while, Adam's siblings and girlfriend, Victoria Lemieux, are the quiet voices of reason trying to assure him that being happy with himself is the real key to happiness. While Matthews's debut YA novel has a fast plot with gritty content and dialogue that will appeal to teens, his characters are flat and Adam's quest for popularity and attitude of, "Money is money. Power is power. Prestige is everything" fail to bring much depth to the protagonist's cautionary tale.—Adrienne L. Strock, Nashville Public Library

Review “Slick, breezy... fast-moving and suspenseful.” (Kirkus)“The funny, unforgiving narration will have readers glued to this story.” (Publishers Weekly)“Matthews’s debut YA novel has a fast plot with gritty content and dialogue that will appeal to teens.” (School Library Journal)“Short, intense chapters, some of which read like poetry, capture snapshots that lend a visceral immediacy to the action.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

But starting as a junior in a new high school seems like exactly the right time to change things. He brainstorms with his best friend, Brian: How can he take over Nixon Collegiate? Or, he amends, not take it over, but win at it?

Step One: Rent Scarface on DVD. (For inspiration.)Step Two: Identify the Nixon Collegiate junior class gods and goddesses.Step Three: Become the guy who has what they want and can get what they need.

Adam searches for the A-listers' weak spot and strikes gold when he gets main goddess Sara Bryant to pay him for doing her physics homework. Soon Adam builds up a very loyal, very demanding all-star clientele for his services. One part nerd, two parts badass, the Pizza Man (he delivers!) ditches his legit job and turns to full-time cheating.

Homework becomes booze becomes fake IDs, and Adam seems to have the hookup for everything. His popularity soars as he unlocks high school achievements left and right. But for Adam, the dozens of girls and limitless influence are not enough. Something else is haunting him, driving him to keep climbing.

Will his attempt to win force him to go too far and lose everything he didn't know he already had?

What a fantastic book this was. First, it was in verse. My favorite! And second, it was both funny and sad at the same time! I was transported to a TV sitcom from my childhood (Dawson's Creek, Saved By the Bell, One Tree Hill) and I loved every minute! There were so many things I LOVED about this book, I don't know where to start. Let's try the characters first. "You know them. and you don't know them." You know...the popular kids. All high schools have them. The ones everyone wants to be like and hope and pray that they will even look at you. Adam wants to be one of those kids. The way Adam describes them, though, you can pick out exactly who they were in your high school. For me, it was a guy named Casey and a girl named Katie. I wanted to date Casey and look like Katie. For Adam it was the same way. He wanted to fit in with the "gods and goddesses." The character's felt so real and seeing everything from Adam's POV made the story more real. You could see the struggles he had with being a good boyfriend to Victoria, or being a "god" himself.I know a lot of people might think the plot of the story is unrealistic. What would make a guy do all of those things like steal tests, sell fake ID's and deal drugs for popularity. I see it all the time!! Even in middle school my students are doing drastic things for popularity. I wish that kids didn't have to resort to illegal things for people to like them, but sadly this happens all the time.Overall, I thought the writing was spot on and the characters left me thinking about them for days. I can't wait for this book to come out so others can enjoy it as much as I did. I would recommend this for high school students because there is some scenes that younger students shouldn't know about...like threesomes...

HOW TO WIN AT HIGH SCHOOL was a tremendous book, exploring the inner turmoil often kept secret By Teen Reads It’s maddening to see people who don’t realize how lucky they are; they are so blinded by what they want to achieve that they do not stop to look around and appreciate what they already have. Adam, the main character, is one of those people. He is blinded by his need to lose his “loser” status, and his need to be popular is all he can think about. On one hand, this annoyed me to no end --- why can’t he just live his life and be happy with what he has?! But on the other hand, I empathized with him; no one likes having no friends at school. I’m a protective person by nature --- I’m often called “mom” by my friends --- and I felt a strange sort of protectiveness over Adam. I wanted him to realize how lucky he was and not let societal ideals get to his head. That odd feeling of protectiveness made me emotionally attached to Adam, which, in turn, led me to shout and yell at the book multiple times (that’s when you know a book is good). It was heartbreaking to watch Adam completely throw away everything that was important to him. Everything went on a downhill spiral so fast that you’re left in the dust. He became a different person almost overnight. His greed for popularity and acceptance ruined relationships and made his life not worth living anymore. This topic of popularity is something that hits people right in the heart, and it really did for me --- I think it is safe to assume that everyone has wanted to be considered “cool” at some point in their lives. However, some people --- like Adam --- let themselves be consumed by it. I loved this book because it hit so close to home and because of the depth of the main character; Adam has so many flaws, but they just serve to make him more human. There are some pretty explicit scenes so think twice before letting your 10-year-old brother read HOW TO WIN AT HIGH SCHOOL, but overall, this was a tremendous book, exploring the inner turmoil often kept secret.Reviewed by Pranshu A.

Dark and squicky but well-written By Shae Has Left the Room Originally reviewed at http://www.shaelit.com/2015/04/review-how-to-win-at-high-school-by-owen-matthews/HTWaHS is the character study of a loser junior who uses Al Pacino mob film Scarface to go from the high school junk pile to the top of the heap. It’s… not my usual fare, to say the least. On the one hand, tracking the start of Adam’s rise to power is pretty fascinating. Despite coming across as an underachiever, Adam pinpoints how to leverage the upper class’s weaknesses to further his goals. Whether it’s crafting essays or scoring booze, Adam works the laws of supply and demand. This kid has the principles of economics in the bag. I’ve always found fictional accounts of subtle manipulation and psychological pressure to be fascinating, so I fell into the story pretty quickly. On the other hand, loser Adam is kind of a jerk. He’s a whiny little nerdball who is obsessed with losing his virginity and being “cool.” And “winner” Adam? That guy goes lightyears beyond “jerk.” And that’s kind of the point. On the Goodreads description, the cover copy talks about this book being “laugh-out-loud funny.” Forget that. This book is not funny, nor is it particular fun. Actually, it’s surprisingly dark. It also does a great job of skirting around any direct author-to-reader moralizing. We see and feel what Adam feels. When he’s riding high, the world is all dolla dolla bills, y’all. There’s not a shred of foreshadowing or gloom on the horizon. And yet all the outs are there. Characters warn Adam about the road he’s following. He’s shown different paths he could take and still be happy. But he doesn’t. The prose does a fantastic job of keeping an Adam-centric tone. This is his story with his voice. Adam’s not going to use descriptions of regret and unease, because that’s not what he feels. We as readers might feel sorrow, disgust, pity, or loathing for the things that Adam chooses to do, but that’s the talent of the author. We’re allowed to see around Adam’s beliefs while maintaining the integrity of the narration. It’s beautifully done, actually. But yeah, this is a dark book. It’s dark and squicky and kind of makes me want to pour bleach in my ears. It’s not a book I’ll ever touch again. Subjectively, I can’t rate it as high as it might deserve for that very reason. But author dude, thumbs up to you, sir.Points Added For: The unique writing style and chapter structure, Adam’s rise to power, the psychological plausibility, the ending.Points Subtracted For: All the female objectification, the content that I had to skim in places because nope nope nope, Tommy.Good For Fans Of: Scarface, rise-to-power stories, conning mafia boys, metaphorical train wrecks.Notes For Parents: I kind of lost count of the content warnings, partially because I had to start skimming. Let’s just call it very much upper YA and leave it at that.Note: I received a review copy of this title from the publisher for review consideration.

A novel by the author of The New York Times Notable Book, Tales from the Irish Club

It is June 1968: Robert Kennedy has just been murdered, the streets are simmering with discontent, and the Irish community of Oakland Park in Pittsburgh is being swept away by change. Daly Racklin becomes the reluctant leader of a dying neighborhood, culture, and people. He is at once a man torn by his father's omnipotent shadow and the struggles of his own heart, and as his elevated position brings him from one home to another he increasingly discovers the importance of what he sees disappearing. Bing Crosby's Last Song is a hilarious, touching, heartwrenching story of survival and love, a community's demise and a wanderer's rebirth. Full of barroom lore, hard-bitten wisdom, wry humor, and faith tempered by skepticism, this novel will delight readers of William Kennedy and Frank McCourt.

Bing Crosby's Last Song: A Novel, by Lester Goran

From Publishers Weekly In 1968, a 49-year-old small-time attorney learns that his heart is failing and he has only months to live. That is where Goran (Tales from the Irish Club, etc.) begins his surprisingly merry picaresque novel about Daly "Right" Racklin and all the people he generously looks after in his Irish Pittsburgh neighborhood. The merriment is surprising because death is always so close. Daly's Uncle Finnerty lies in a coma; Dr. Richard I. Pierce (Doc Rest in Peace) has been waiting 20 years for his organs to fail; Michelle Shortall's body is slowly, fatally calcifying, turning her to stone (Daly has known Michelle since he committed adultery with her widowed aunt); Owney O'Doherty, one of Racklin's drinking buddies, dies sitting at the wheel of his Cadillac; even their neighborhood is threatened by the bulldozers of the ever-expanding University of Pittsburgh. Living in the shadow of his father, an attorney and local hero who fought all the good fights, Daly never pretends to live up to the nickname he has inherited from his dad. Indeed, Daly seems happier with the mantle of his Uncle Finnerty, who called himself the Wrong Racklin and sought "an eighth deadly sin." But when not drinking at one of his many haunts (where his cronies wax nostalgic for the time when "Bing Crosby sang only for us on the haunted sidewalks of our youth"), Daly spends his days looking after those who can't look after themselves. As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that he has earned the name Right, perhaps better than his father?even if he himself never realizes it. The substance of the book is not the plot but the stories the men swap over their drinks and the intricate relationships within a vibrant community dying before its time?all of it enveloped in an elegiac tenderness. Editor, George Witte; author tour. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The year is 1968 and the locale is Goran's (She Loved Me Once and Other Stories, Kent State Univ. Pr., 1997) familiar Oakland Avenue, a mostly Irish working-class neighborhood in Pittsburgh now threatened by university expansion. Bobby Kennedy has just been killed and the neighborhood is awash in sadness, self-pity, and discontent. Change does not come easily to this culture of pubs, the Church, hooligans, and in-bred cousins. Enter Daly Racklin?community fixture, sometime lawyer, and man of the streets. Despite his recent grim medical diagnosis and his chronic inability to get his life in gear, he becomes the spokesperson for his muddled neighbors as they attempt to stave off "academic sprawl." Clearly an extension of Goran's earlier short stories, this is more a nostalgic snapshot of a disappearing way of life than a novel. Colorful cohorts are posed here with little action, in much the same order as they must have sat in St. Agnes elementary school decades ago. Readers of Goran's earlier work will find little new here, but first-timers and fans of Frank McCourt, Brian Moore, and William Trevor will enjoy his characterization and wry, softly sardonic wit.?Susan Gene Clifford, Aerospace Corp., El Segundo, Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist You don't see many lovable drunks in contemporary fiction, perhaps because today's authors are wary of being labeled enablers. Thankfully, Goran has enabled Daly Racklin, the hero of this heartfelt, elegiac novel, to take his place at the bar, the latest in a long line of melancholy tipplers who help us feel the ineffable sadness of most human pursuits. Daly's story begins in working-class Pittsburgh in 1968, on the eve of Bobby Kennedy's assassination and just after Daly has learned that his damaged heart is due to give out any day. A less cheerful version of Elwood P. Dowd, Daly moves from bar to bar throughout his Oakland neighborhood, dispensing irony and good fellowship--without the aid of a six-foot white rabbit--to a motley crew of Irish neighbors, all struggling through changing times and misfiring relationships. "Outside the night wore shoes of iron, but in here there were good men to spare," Daly muses as he orders another round for his friends. Bing Crosby has sung his last song, but Daly Racklin keeps the tune in our ears. Bill Ott

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Graceful Novel of Working Class Pittsburgh By J. Mullin This is a moving novel about an aging lawyer and Pittsburgh native, Daly "Right" Racklin, who struggles to understand and live up to the legacy of his late father Boyce Racklin, a champion of the underdog and fellow Pittsburgh attorney. The first page of the novel paints a pretty bleak picture, as Daly is told by his doctor his heart is failing and that nothing can be done to extend his life beyond a year. Daly proceeds to try and get his life in order, all the while continuing to give of himself to family, friends, and relatives of deceased buddies who always seem to take advantage of his kindness and betray him. All of this takes place during the turbulent summer of 1968, after the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Dr. King.Daly comes off as almost Saint-like, especially early in the novel, where he exudes a sense of calm patience when the world seems to come apart around him. He cares for a family that steals from him, because he knew their deceased father and knew he would've done the same had Daly died young and left a widow with children. Daly carries on a friendship with a blind divorcee, Jessie, and then gets involved in an unlikely, whirlwind romance with a mystical woman (Gloria Scone) that he meets at a wake. All the while, Daly is frequently visited by visions of Pretty Boy Floyd, and we learn one of the most vivid memories of his childhood was a visit to the grass field where Floyd was gunned down.Overall, I thought this was a very moving novel, with the characters of Daly and Jessie drawn exceptionally well. The scenes in Oakland (a working class Pittsburgh neighborhood) pubs were excellent, as bartenders reminisced with Daly about his working class hero dad, the original "Right" Racklin. The author notes that it was difficult for Daly to live up the reputation of a good father. I also loved the road trip by Daly and his friends to NYC, to attend the funeral of RFK. Some of the plot twists seemed a little forced, ( I thought the whole Gloria Scone interlude was a little abrupt and unrealistic, and detracted from the novel), but overall it was an engaging read and a moving glimpse at a time and place that is infrequently visited.

Since the dawn of time, Holy Basil has been referred to as the Mother of All Medicine Plants.

Tulsi, as she is known by the Hindus, is believed to be embodiment of the goddess Lakshmi. The plant plays a quintessential part in their everyday life. They pray to her, make religious beads from her stems and regard her as the most healing of all plants in Ayurvedic Medicine. The latest clinical trials have found those theories to be correct. Considered to be “adaptogen” Holy Basil is able to undo the wrongs done to the body mind and spirit through stress. If the rumblings from the laboratories hold true we may well find that Holy Basil holds the answer to diabetes and cancer as well as myriad other health complaints.

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography A great many people are afraid of the will of God, and yet I believe that one of the sweetest lessons that we can learn in the school of Christ is the surrender of our wills to God, letting Him plan for us and rule our lives. If I know my own mind, if an angel should come from the throne of God and tell me that I could have my will done the rest of my days on earth, and that everything I wished should be carried out, or that I might refer it back to God, and let God’s will be done in me and through me, I think in an instant I would say: “Let the will of God be done.” I cannot look into the future. I do not know what is going to happen to-morrow; in fact, I do not know what may happen before night; so I cannot choose for myself as well as God can choose for me, and it is much better to surrender my will to God’s will. Abraham found this out, and I want to call your attention to four surrenders that he was called to make. I think that they give us a pretty good key to his life.

Moody's Men of the Bible isn't about all of the men of the Bible, but of Abraham, Moses, Naaman, Nehemiah, Herod (Antipas)and John the Baptist, the Man Born Blind and Joseph of Arimathea, the Penitent Thief. The are not biographies, but extended sermons on these men. Herod and John, Blind Man and Joseph are two paired sets that contrast and compare the two. They do not sound preachy, even if they are sermons, instead examining the lives of these men for the lessons we can gain from them. And are well done at that. The Blind man for example actually brought out more than most commentaries covering him and how he was healed and then examined by the Pharisees. Well worth reading.

Waiting on God is a devotional book and contains 31 chapters for each day of the month. It was Murray's conviction that "waiting" was the most characteristic quality of Christian life. For in it, presupposes our inferior relation to the Almighty, and so also our dependency on him for everyday life. It is God's quiet and peaceful strength that we need in order to navigate the world.

From the Back Cover How often the 'busyness' of life can creep up and overwhelm us. Rather than depending upon our own strength, as Christians it is our privileged birthright to enter into a daily time of reverent meditation and silence, waiting only upon God for: His answers to our problems, His direction in our lives, and, most importantly, His awesome presence refreshing our spirits and teaching us more about Himself. Andrew Murray shares thirty–one heartfelt meditations, one for each day of the month, to help renew our vision and quicken our desire to turn to the Lord for His quite, peaceful strength. Murray's own prayer was that the Lord would use these meditations "...to draw all to Himself, to learn in practice and experience the blessed art of waiting only upon God."

About the Author Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.

In his devotional books he usually breaks a subject down into a month of daily lessons which require approximately 20-30 minutes of prayerful reading. One of the most difficult lessons of the Christian life is how to patiently wait on God. In 1993 I devoted 30 minutes a day for one month to studying this book. This altered my life. Since then waiting on God has been one of the greatest joys in my life! It doesn't get any better than this!Thank you, Andrew Murray and thank you, Jesus.

But my Christian life wasn't yet mature, (still isn't), so I couldn't grasp what Waiting on the Lord is all about. We have been trained to "do" things, to take on "action items", to "Just do it".I recently attended a winter conference by Forerunner Christian Church in Fremont, CA. They are a church that focuses on "waiting on the Lord" and to have an "inner life" with our Lord. After the conference, I picked up this book again on my bookshelves, and what a new revelation it is.In Isaiah 40:31, they that "hope or wait" on the Lord, shall renew their strength.... The Hebrew word of "hope or wait" also means to be bound together. After reading this book, I can better understand what it means to "wait on the Lord". It doesn't mean that we just Don't do it, but that we let God do thing His Way. If He along is the author of our salvation, could He not also master everything that we encounter in our lives? The insights offered in this book are so valuable one hardly hears this kind of teaching in sermons nowadays.Highly recommended.

Heaton In 1991 I read this book and was so impressed that I sought permission from the publisher to use it as a text book in our night school. EVERYONE who has taken this course has commented on the spiritual impact it has made in their lives. Mr. Murray, along with a number of other men of that age, may not have been "giants" in doctrinal materials, but they were way ahead of many today in their spiritual devotion to God and His Word. I HIGHLY recommend that every saint read and reread this book. One of the saints of the past said, every good book ought to be read over many times.

The story of author Jack London and his second wife, Charmian Kittridge. Jack's early beginnings of belief in materialism alone ruled the universe, and his notions that science disproved anything like romance, specifically the concept of love. “Why should I care what people think?” asked Jack London. “Let ‘em say I’m a rough, savage fellow. Untrained, unrefined, self-made. A man which strives to hide beneath an attitude of roughness and unconventionality. Do I attempt to un-convince them? It’s just easier to leave their convictions alone. It’s so much easier to live placidly and complacently. O course, to live placidly and complacently is not to live at all.” Writer, sailor, gold prospector, tramp, oyster pirate, rancher. Jack grew up in a world that preached materialism and science over things of the spirit, and which spoke against out dated notions such as love. He came to believe that everything in life had to be approached scientifically. He believed that “all phenomena, whether it be an emotional response, or a sunrise, can be reduced to a chemical reaction.” He believed the only rational idea for marriage was for the breeding of the race (anyone’s race). His first marriage, to Bess Madden, was founded on scientific principles. Though he didn’t find any satisfaction with what he believed, this is how he saw life, and in his mind would never change. Until he met Charmian Kittridge. Charmian was not a lady of her period. She didn’t fancy dresses (though she could upon occasion), preferring pleated skirts. She’d ride a horse straddle, never side saddle. She was an editor at the newspaper her aunt owned. She could box, fence, play piano, and was always up for adventure. Most women hated her, most men loved her. She was, as her aunt wrote Jack; “different from the average sort”. Jack wanted to know how different. They met, and, after a series of emotional mishaps (Jack’s scientific marriage having become a disaster), discovered something both had yearned for in life - love. Charmian believed in love, and knew what love should be all about. Jack wasn’t expecting love when it hit him senseless. In a time when men went adventuring with other men, and a man’s best friend was another man, Jack and Charmian adventured together as best friends. They traveled in and out of the States (for fun and for Jack’s lecture tours), sailed the South Seas in a 43 foot sloop, living life to the fullest. Jack wrote – “When I finally came to grips with love, I found fame a vanity, success - meaningless. But this did not cause me to become self-centered. I found meaning in the company of my kind, and self worth in the company of love, which is the best fame of all.” Near the end of his life – Jack said “I’m free! Free of the primitive, the survival of the fittest – and…free of materialist concepts.” When Jack died at the age of 40, he had written over 50 novels, built a working ranch in Sonoma County, and had traveled all over the world. When he died, literally, in the arms of Charmian, he said “you’re all I have left”. His strength of heart and presence was such that – within a few years of this death – many members of his “Bohemian crowd” committed suicide. They simply didn’t know what to do, now that their “spark of life” was gone. Though this in itself is an historical storytelling, it is still a "work of fiction". Never-the-less has been exhaustively researched. Thanks due to the author being guided hand in hand, heart in heart, by the founders of the Jack London Foundation, Russ & Winnie Kingman, of Glen Ellen, California. This work is based on the screenplay, "LONDON in LOVE", penned by the same author.

By Joyce Devereaux What a moving recount of two people so in love with life and each other. A gifted story-teller, the author captures the essence of the man, Jack London, and portrays his character so clearly with humor, emotion and feeling. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end and highly recommend it to anyone who loves life itself.
