A detective investigating the murder of a millionaire teams up with master sleuth Fleming Stone in this clever mystery from a pioneer of American crime fiction Eager to prove himself as talented a crime-solver as his hero, the famous investigator Fleming Stone, young detective Herbert Burroughs takes on a puzzling case: the murder of wealthy businessman Joseph Crawford, who was killed in the study of his New Jersey home. With no shortage of suspects, the primary clue is a woman’s gold bag discovered at the scene of the crime. Burroughs believes the old man’s lovely niece is innocent, and he’s beginning to fall for her besides. But the young woman has a clear motive: She stands to inherit the bulk of Crawford’s fortune—and she admits to owning a gold purse! Her unscrupulous fiancé might be the real culprit, however, or it could be one of the millionaire victim’s several disloyal servants. No matter how hard he tries, Burroughs cannot make sense of the clues he unearths, and it soon becomes apparent that only a mind as perceptive as Fleming Stone’s can solve this impossible crime. So the student decides to turn to the master—even if it means seeing the object of his heart’s desire proven guilty once and for all. This ebook features a new introduction by Otto Penzler and has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

As a history teacher, student and all around enthusiast I appreciated the historical accuracy relative to the time period. It was clever and engaging with the classic 40's investigator feel. The protagonist Johnny has just enough rough around the edges charm to make him desirable and rakish rather than cliche. Nicely done! Can't wait for the next installment!!

I'm trying to go slow because I don't want the story to be over too soon. This is an interesting book about gambling and murder in the Atlanta, GA area. The author writes as if he has personal experience there which makes the story seem realistic. Mr. Sinor knows how to make the characters come to life. The style of the book keeps you looking for the next thing to happen. I highly recommend it for people who like murder mystery and gambling. I don't like gambling myself. so it is interesting to see how the Dixie Mafia works.

Would like to see it as a movie though while reading it I visualized various actors and actresses playing those parts. Almost like a movie in my mind. Can't wait for the next one. Mr. Sinor has a way with descriptive words that actually paint a picture for you as you are reading.

So I wanted to have an opportunity to include some thoughts about it to the blog tour I participated in today. This book, and the entire series actually, is just as hot as it looks! I love Caleb and I love Gianna! This final book was such a thrill ride. After what happened to Gianna in the second book, which I won't say in case you haven't read it, I was so impressed with Caleb and his actions, and how he stayed so true to her. Then he still maintains that bad boy persona we've all come to know and love.I did question a few of Gianna's actions, but then again, after what happened, I can kind of understand why she might make these decisions. But honestly, you just have to love these books, and that's all there is to it. The author has done an amazing job on this series, and this was a wonderful conclusion to it. The writing was so good, so well-paced, and so touching. If you haven't read the series, you have to get it!! It has heart, and it's hot too! What more could you want!?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great series By Amazon Customer Loved the series. I liked the characters and especially loved Caleb but I feel like the ending was rushed a hell of a lot.*Spoilers*Who was the stalker yeah I get josh was crazy and all but it was already proven he couldn't have written the letters so who did?? And what happened with there parents getting back together?? I feel like I need 3 more chapters in this book to wrap it all up but overall great series I love me some bad boys

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good ending to this series By KLV >Book Review – Toxic Bad Boy ->I received this book from the author and Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. I am an independent reviewer. This is the third and final novel in the Beware of Bad Boy series and ends in an HEA.>Caleb is in juvie for 9 months. He can't help Gianna heal. Here is another example of these two characters actually acting their ages. Gianna lies to Caleb instead of being truthful, causing Caleb to act out with rebound girls that he has to explain later. There is a lot of teen angst in this very grown up story. This series cannot quite figure out what age it is. There is the very real problem of Gianna and Caleb being able to both heal enough to enjoy their relationship again.>I thought it was funny when Caleb just refused to let go of Gianna. She'd break up with him and he'd continue to be with her. Having Caleb's art talent blossom was a nice preview into his future. There was a huge unanswered question. Who sent Gianna the pictures and notes? Nothing was ever answered about that. It was only proven that Josh could not have done it.>The side story regarding Cece and Dante was heartbreaking, but probably the most realistic portrayal of a relationship in that situation. I love the peek into the future. I would have liked a bit of their college life, but the ending was perfect.>This book is appropriate for an adult audience due to sexual situations.

Shadow Scale (Seraphina), by Rachel Hartman

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—This sequel to the award-winning Seraphina (Random, 2012) takes the half-human, half-dragon girl on a search for others like herself. The revelation of Seraphina's true heritage has placed her in a position of power with Queen Glisselda who sends her on a mission to find other half-human/half-dragon beings. With her loyal friend, Abdo, she searches the lands for the creatures she has only met previously in dreams, in the hopes that they may trip the balance of power toward the kingdom of Goredd. Though the halflings were feared and reviled by the human population historically, some of them managed to hide in plain sight and were elevated to sainthood. With the insane Jannoula as their leader, these long-lived beings have emerged from hiding and are bent on taking control of Goredd and its human population. And, the love she and the Queen's intended, Kiggs, have for each other may ultimately destroy any chance Seraphina has for personal happiness. This is not a stand-alone story, and those who haven't read the first novel in the series will spend the first third of the novel getting caught up. By then, it may be too late for some, as the lengthy work suffered from an over-abundance of explanation of who the dragons were without really giving readers a sense of the main characters' ideals and motivations. Still, for lovers of Christopher Paolini's and Anne McCaffrey's dragon stories, this is an adequate addition to dragonlore.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. has its moments, but unfortunately for someone who loved Seraphina, this one has lots of issues By B. Capossere Rachel Hartman’s Seraphina was a subtle, exquisitely quiet novel, nuanced and filled with sharply realized characters. I absolutely fell in love with it, placing it on my list of top reads that year, so it kills me to report that the eagerly-awaited sequel, Shadow Scale, not only failed to meet my (admittedly high) expectations, but really disappointed across the board.Shadow Scale picks up shortly after the events of Seraphina, with dragons involved in an all-out civil war and their ousted leader Comonot allied with the human land of Goredd. While Princess Glisselda and Prince Kiggs prepare for war, Seraphina travels to find other ityasaari (half-dragons) such as herself, prompted by a discovery by Orma (her full dragon uncle) that the half-dragons might be able to provide a magical defense against dragon attacks. Her antagonist in this endeavor is Jannoula, the ityasaari who nearly possessed her mind in the prior novel and who uses that talent to take over other nearly all the half-dragons in this oneI had several issues with Shadow Scale. One is the pacing felt way off. The novel comes in at about 600 pages, which felt over-long by several hundred pages. The story started off slowly, then plodded along from place to place, much as Seraphina herself did, with little variation — no sense of urgency even when the storyline seemed to call for it, no slowing down for quieter moments. That isn’t to say there were no quiet moments, but it all felt apace; those moments didn’t stand out at all. The whole thing just dragged for me, and it never really felt like the author was fully in control or cognizant of the pacing. This plodding sense attached itself as well to both the main character, who was surprisingly passive throughout most of the novel, and to the plot, which felt quite repetitive for the first half or more. Seraphina would travel to a new land in search of some half-dragons, find them, then Jannoula would possess them, Seraphina would bemoan their possession, then move on to the next land, where the process would repeat itself. Throughout it all, Seraphina was inexplicably removed from it all, paying lip service to the horror of it all, and to the real-world implications, but it never felt like she tried (really tried) to do much about it. Part of the problem here I think is that the solution is tied so much to her coming-of-age epiphany, which Hartman clearly wants to save for the climactic ending, but 500+ pages is a long time for the sort of delayed agency (I had other issues with that ending as well—its abruptness, its ease, the way it comes somewhat out of left field, etc., but I won’t go into those issues more so as to avoid spoilers). If the protagonist was one issue, her antagonist was equally problematic. For one, the half-dragons’ mental powers just felt muddy to me. Jannoula can possess other ityasaari and basically wholly charm humans. How is never made clear, or why she is so distinct from the others in this capability. It also seems a matter of authorial convenience when she can fully charm people and when they can resist, or when she uses her possession to learn things and when she does not. And her pretty much unfailing ability robbed the book of much of its potential suspense. Finally, her backstory, which is meant to offer up some complexity to her villainy, never felt wholly connected to her. Here I think it would have helped matters if Hartman had chosen a different narrative POV, using multiple narrators rather than focusing solely on Seraphina. Putting us in the head of Jannoula would have deepened her character, while giving us some other POVs — some of the possessed half-dragon, the full dragon Eskar, young Abdo — would have allowed us to break out of the repetitive plot cycle as well as created some of that painful urgency the book needed in places.Shadow Scale has its moments, and Hartman does a nice job with some bittersweet endings, but it isn’t near enough to overcome its many issues: too great a length, a passive main character and overly effective villain, uneven pacing, a repetitive plot structure, unclear abilities/goals, and a problematic climax. It kills me to say it, but not recommended.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Not what I wanted, but not too bad By Dreams Book two started with a prologue written by a future scholar who was looking back on past events, recalling the very events that made up book two. Right away I got this gut feeling that a certain plotline was going to turn out in a way I wasn’t particularly fond of. So I started reading this book with a hesitant mindset. This book was all about preparing for war and assembling the pieces to the puzzle of the human-dragon hybrids that we started to uncover back in book one. Shadow Scale takes place a few months after book one ends, but you do not really feel like much time has passed between the two books.I hated the romance in this book. While I never got the feeling the romance was going to be the main plot after reading book one, I wanted something more -anything- to happen in this one. Neither Prince Kiggs nor Seraphina wanted to overstep that line that would end our suffering from watching their longing. He was promised to marry his cousin, whom both he and Seraphina were fond of, and neither felt it was the right time to hurt her by sharing their newfound feelings with each other. So we waited. We sent covert glances to each other. We ignored the other. We waited. We did our duty.It was like we have this fiery explosion at the end of book one, and then reality sat back in and it was over. I wanted them to get together. I wanted them to make it work. But as the story continued, we lost that focus and it became all about the half-dragons and the saints of old.Which isn't to say it took a bad turn, because I loved meeting the rest from her garden. Even if there were parts in her journey that felt redundant because of the sheer number of characters. There were things about their religions and saints and the dragons from book one that I glossed over when I read Seraphina because it was a lot to take in. But reading this book, it was apparent how things were woven together from the start. I really enjoyed that aspect of the story. But I think the book was a bit too long. Shadow Scale really felt like it was two books put together in a sense. We had about 90% of the book with her off looking for her fellow half dragons, then we had the bit at the end when she returned to her city. And Seraphina from part a, is not the girl from part b. It's like she looses a part of herself and becomes passive. So she just goes about her days while everyone else is where they've becomes trapped. It wasn't this girl who went off to brave angry dragons, and wander off on a foolish hope she can find the hiding half dragons.Words To Live By"He smiled again. I felt a little guilty for cultivating those smiles; I wasn't allowed.""No casualties but my dignity. Some might say that's no loss at all.""Logic can lead to many ends, citizen. No one likes to admit that- not even your philosophers. Dragons revere its incorruptible purity, but logic will coldly lead you over a cliff. It all depends on where you begin, on first principles."OverallI liked Shadow Scale overall, but I am a little disappointed. The book wasn't bad, but I am not in a hurry to reread.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. a satisfying and often surprising conclusion to a story where nothing is ever truly neat or perfect By Miss Print "The world is seldom so simple that it hinges on us alone."The kingdom of Goredd has had an uneasy peace with the dragons found in the neighboring Tanamoot for the past forty years--a time in which the arts have flourished while Goredd's dragon-fighting tools have languished. When mounting tensions between humans and dragons threatens to draw Goredd into the middle of another treacherous war, Seraphina reluctantly finds herself as the center of the conflict. Goredd has few tools left to fight dragons save for rumors of a magical weapon used during the Age of Saints. A weapon Seraphina might be able to recreate with help from other half-dragons like herself. After spending years hiding her true self, Seraphina sets out across kingdoms to seek out the other half-dragons--beings she's only ever previously encountered in her own mind--before war breaks out.As Seraphina gathers her motley band of allies, she soon realizes that war is not the only threat to the half-dragons, her kingdom, or even herself. With so many trying to stop her, Seraphina will have to embrace her true identity, and the ramifications it will have for herself and the other half-dragons, if she has any hope of stopping this senseless war in Shadow Scale (2015) by Rachel Hartman.Shadow Scale is the highly anticipated sequel to Hartman's debut novel Seraphina. While this book does an excellent job of explaining key events from book one, it's still crucial to read these in order.Every aspect of Shadow Scale is handled brilliantly and often surpasses the achievements and charms of Seraphina, which is no small feat. This book is intricate, clever and often unexpected as many given facts from Seraphina are challenged or turned upside down.Shadow Scale picks up shortly after the conclusion of Seraphina but soon moves the story in a new direction as readers learn more about Seraphina's connection to the other half-dragons and how she uses her mind garden to interact with them. Where Hartman's first book is about Seraphina finding herself, Shadow Scale is surely about Seraphina finding her place in the world.Hartman blows Seraphina's world wide open in Shadow Scale as she crosses borders and visits neighboring kingdoms in her search for the other half-dragons. This book is the full package complete with a map and glossary to highlight all of the wonderful details that Hartman has included in this much-expanded world. The way different plot threads and pieces of this world knit together is fascinating and wondrous to behold as this story asks (and sometimes answers) questions about ethics, friendship, love and even what being family can really mean. I can't wait to see what Hartman does next.Shadow Scale is a satisfying and often surprising conclusion to a story where nothing is ever truly neat or perfect but everything does have the potential to be beautiful. The Turtles of Tasman, by Jack London

From the Publisher "Jack London is at his best - that peculiar best which is inimitable... Nothing is more important to note, however, than the soundness of the psychology of all these stories. They are made out of the deep fiber of humanity. By command over such material does Jack London hold his place in our literature. By command over the knack of clearly flowing, acid-biting English that often takes rich color." -- Boston Transcript

"Few collections of short stories from the pen of this author show a greater versatility of thought and literary style than The Turtles of Tasman." -- Boston Daily Advertiser

About the Author Jack London (1876-1916) was an American writer who produced two hundred short stories, more than four hundred nonfiction pieces, twenty novels, and three full-length plays in less than two decades. His best-known works include The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Read "Finis" By Karl Janssen This is one of Jack London's lesser known short story collections. Despite the exotic title, none of the stories take place in Tasmania or the South Seas. Five of the stories take place in northern California, two in the Klondike, and one in an undisclosed location during the paleolithic era. London is primarily famous as an author of wilderness adventure tales and of stories imbued with socialist political ideas. While there are a couple examples of the former, the latter genre is curiously absent from this volume. No politics at all. As an overall body of work, this collection is weak by London's standards, but a few gems shine out from among the rest.In the opening story, "By the Turtles of Tasman", Frederic Travers, a responsible man of high standing, gets a visit from his dying brother Tom, a globetrotting vagabond. It's a study in contrast between the two men, who each embody opposing aspects of London's character: the successful workaholic vs. the wandering adventurer. The writing is very mature and insightful, indicative of some of the more accomplished work of London's later career.Another noteworthy story is "Told in the Drooling Ward", a first-person narrative as told by a feeble-minded inmate of a mental institution. London does an admirable job with the narrator's voice and treats the character with sensitivity and respect.A story I had never heard of that really blew me away was "Finis". A starving man, stranded along the Yukon River in winter, waits to prey upon an unsuspecting traveler in order to save himself. It is as bleak and visceral as London's famous story "To Build a Fire". Suspenseful and skillfully told, it's an excellent story that deserves to be better known. The other five stories in the collection are "The Eternity of Forms", "The Prodigal Father", "The Hobo and the Fairy", "The First Poet", and "The End of the Story". These range in quality from the disappointing to the forgettable. Like many of London's collections, you have to sift through a few pans of dirt to find the gold nuggets.

July 1917: Joseph Reavley, a chaplain, and his sister Judith, an ambulance driver, are bone-weary as they approach the fourth year of the conflict; the peace of the English countryside seems a world away. On the Western Front, the Battle of Passchendaele has begun, and among the many fatalities from Joseph’s regiment is the trusted commanding officer, who is replaced by a young major whose pompous incompetence virtually guarantees that many good soldiers will die needlessly. But soon he, too, is dead―killed by his own men. Although Joseph would like to turn a blind eye, he knows that he must not. Judith, however, anguished at the prospect of courts-martial and executions for the twelve men arrested for the crime, has no such inhibitions and, risking her own life, helps all but one of the prisoners to escape.

Back in England, Joseph and Judith’s brother, Matthew, continues his desperate pursuit to unmask the sinister figure known as the Peacemaker―an obsessed genius who has committed murder and treason in an attempt to stop Britain from winning the war. As Matthew trails the Peacemaker, Joseph tracks his escaped comrades through Switzerland and into enemy territory. His search will lead to a reckoning pitting courage and honor against the blind machinery of military justice.

At Some Disputed Barricade (World War One Series), by Anne Perry

From Publishers Weekly Fans of the first three books in this WWI series from Perry, best known for her Victorian police procedurals, will eagerly pick up this fourth volume to learn more of the ongoing saga of the three Reavley siblings: Joseph, a chaplain working with soldiers on the front line in France; Matthew, a British intelligence officer; and Judith, an ambulance driver. (Newcomers may struggle to understand the backstory.) Matthew continues his search for the traitorous mastermind—the "Peacemaker"—plotting to align Britain with Germany to end the war, while Joseph is working on a smaller mystery: was British officer Howard Northrop killed by one of his own men? Exposition slows down the pace in places, but the author vividly captures the unspeakable horrors of the Great War. Readers won't have long to wait for the fifth and final entry in the series, We Shall Not Sleep (Reviews, Feb. 5). (Mar.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist The fourth entry in Perry's World War I series finds chaplain Joseph Reavley three years into his service in the trenches of Ypres on the western front. The British army has suffered appalling losses, and the men are exhausted, hungry, and afraid. Now an incompetent officer, the son of a general, unwilling to take advice from more experienced soldiers, is sending his men to certain death by making wrongheaded, uninformed decisions. When the officer's body is discovered, it falls to Joseph to determine whether he was killed by his own men. The investigation is complicated when Joseph's sister, Judith, a fearless ambulance driver, is drawn into the dispute. Meanwhile, their brother, Matthew, who works for British intelligence, is seeing indications of the work of the Peacemaker, who, under the guise of seeking an end to the conflict, is sabotaging Britain's war effort. Perry explores the shifting nature of loyalty, conscience, and honor when set against the backdrop of a blood-soaked battlefield, and her grisly descriptions of that battlefield are heartrending. They are all involved in WWI - Matthew in Military Intelligence, Judith is an ambulance driver at the front, and Joseph is the chaplain for the troops also at the front. Their parents were murdered before the war, because they found a treaty that would make an alliance between England and Germany, creating a major world power from a mastermind called The Peacemaker, a man high up in the government. The first half of the book is a bit slow, but it has to, to explain the enormity of the war and the horror and slaughter. The story revolves around some troops who try to get their inept division leader who is causing more death and injury to his troops to stop. In an attempt to scare him into reality, these men hold a kangaroo court, but something goes awry. It is up to Joseph to find answers and get the men back to a semblance of normalcy.BUT the 2nd half of the book sparkles!! While Mrs. Perry show the horror on the front, the filth and death and mustard gas, but she has yet to say anything about the flying aces of WWI - She vividly shows us dogfights and even has Joseph take part in one - he even crosses paths with the Red Baron! The brilliance of writing takes us there on the front and we feel the pain of war. There is one more book to this series, and although I am a fan of the Monk and Pitt series, I will miss this series -Perry creates a vivid picture of war.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Lest We Forget By Reader Leader Britain fought "The Great War" long before the U.S. entered the fight. Ms. Perry graphically shows the horrors of trench warfare. As an English and history teacher, I wish I had had a book like this available to enable me to awake in my students an interest in this part of the early 20th century. The author puts you right there with the soldiers and captures the attitudes -- the glue -- that held that country together. World War I was the tough-to-endure preparation that gave English men and women the stamina to withstand the continual bombings of World War II. You may feel that aspects of the book are romanticized, but no one who reads this book will fail to learn more about how the first 20 years of the last century shaped the 80 years that followed -- and continues even today. This series has been an education for me. Some may find parts of it slow moving, but I have relished every word.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A riveting, but heartbreaking tale. By Shirley Schwartz This fourth book in Perry's World War I series is just as good as the three previous. In it we continue to follow the lives of the Reavely family. Matthew is still on the trail of the "Peacemaker", and still finds that he cannot trust anyone. Joseph is still in Flanders with his troops. But Joseph finds himself far out of his comfort zone as he actually goes behind enemy lines to bring some English deserters back to face a court-martial. Judith is still driving her ambulance. The characters in this series are so very strong, as are the plots. I know that I have learned a lot about this appalling war by reading this series. The book is set in the summer of 1917, and the troops have been fighting a war that has gone on for three long years. And the death tolls for all people in this war were staggering. This is a totally unforgettable series with a totally unforgettable family in the centre of all this war to end all wars. We see war, death, love, intrigue, loyalty and, not only these things, but a really good story that will keep your interest until the end of the series which is to be the next book. I think that looking back on it from this point in time, it has made me realize how very tragic this war was, and how little it really solved.

Set in the Georgian period, about 20 years before the Regency, These Old Shades is considered to be the novel that launched Heyer's career. It features two of Heyer's most memorable characters: Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, and Leonie, whom he rescues from a life of ignomy and comes to love and marry.

The Duke is known for his coldness of manner, his remarkable omniscience, and his debauched lifestyle. Late one evening, he is accosted by a young person dressed in ragged boy's clothing running away from a brutal rustic guardian. The Duke buys "Leon" and makes the child his page. "Leon" is in fact Leonie, and she serves the Duke with deep devotion. When he uncovers the true story of her birth, he wreaks an unforgettable revenge on her sinister father in a chilling scene of public humiliation.

"Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." ―Katie Fforde

These Old Shades, by Georgette Heyer

Amazon.com Review A gentleman was strolling down a side street in Paris, on his way back from the house of one Madame de Verchoureux. He walked mincingly, for the red heels of his shoes were very high. A long purple cloak, rose-lined, hung from his shoulders and was allowed to fall carelessly back from his dress, revealing a full-skirted coat of purple satin, heavily laced with gold; a waistcoat of flowered silk; faultless small clothes; and a lavish sprinkling of jewels on his cravat and breast. The gentleman in question is Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, known by friends and enemies alike as Satanas--the devil. On this particular evening, the dangerous rake crosses paths with Léon, a red-headed youth of low birth who is fleeing a certain beating at his brutal brother's hands. On a whim, Avon buys the boy and makes him his page. It soon becomes clear, however, that Léon is not what he seems, and that Avon has an ulterior motive for bringing him into his household. Set in pre-Revolutionary France, These Old Shades follows a twisting course as young Léon (or is it Léonie?) is swept up in a dangerous mystery: how to account for the page's amazing resemblance to the sinister Compte de Saint Vire, for example; and why will this man go to any lengths to get the youth in his power?

Georgette Heyer's historical romances tend to fall into two different camps: later novels such as Cotillion, False Colours, and Sylvester feature larger-than-life comic characters and romantic pairings more akin to Beatrice and Benedick than Hero and Claudio. Earlier works such as These Old Shades, however, tend to be darker, tinged with mystery and overshadowed by very real menace. What both types share is Heyer's fine storytelling and encyclopedic knowledge of Regency mores and manners--her books are the next best thing to a time machine. These Old Shades's greatest asset, however, is the charming Léonie: beautiful, brave, and loyal to a fault, with a fondness for swordplay and pistols and a delightfully incomplete grasp of the English language. Heyer herself was so fond of this character that she featured her in two more novels, Devil's Cub and An Infamous Army. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal Justin Alastair, Duke of Avon, is called "Satanas" by enemy and friend alike. In the aristocratic circles of both London and Paris he has a reputation as a dangerous and debauched rake. He has the occasional odd whim, however, and when a semistarved, ragged child literally falls into his arms on a dark Paris street, Justin purchases the miserable scrap from his abusive guardian and makes the child his page. Cleaned up and properly dressed, Leon proves to be surprisingly comely, with delicate features and flaming red hair. His delicate manners coexist with a personality that combines innocence and arrogance with a fiery temper and a willful stubbornness. Strangest of all, he bears a strong resemblance to the Comte de Saint-Vire, an old enemy of Justin's. Before long Leon is unmasked as the girl Leonie, but the mystery of her heritage deepens. The strength of the characters rather than the plot fuels this novel. Justin cuts a dark and brooding hero figure; his motives are definitely dubious at the beginning of the story and remain questionable. Even the secondary characters are strongly drawn, distinct, and important to plot development. Narrator Cornelius Garrett does an excellent job, offering a rendition of Justin that is suitably languid. Highly recommended.Barbara Rhodes, Northeast Texas Lib. Syst., Garland Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Like Tom Jones, it is densely written and it is intricate. The plot is not merely a structure for explaining how and why the characters fall in love. Instead, the love story is a natural element of the overall plot. The story is subtly developed, like a good mystery; clues are dropped throughout and the big climax scene is stunning. When I read that scene as a teenager, I was so amazed, I re-read it and then re-read the entire book to that point to figure out why I hadn't picked up on what was going to happen. Unpredictability is such a relief. The relationship between the hero and the much-younger heroine is developed slowly. He is urbane and dry, she charming and playful. Despite their age difference, it becomes clear that they are well-suited. She balances him, and makes him human rather than the cold and arrogant man he is at first. Another important element is that the dialogue often resembles the dialogue in a Jane Austen book; the formalities and conventions of rank and address are respected. Finally, the supporting characters are well-drawn and entertaining, and the villian is truly disturbing. Since I read this book many years ago, I do not think I have ever read a better romance novel.

75 of 79 people found the following review helpful. words cannot describe how WONDERFUL this story is By A Customer 'These Old Shades' is my absolute favourite by Georgette Heyer. Out of so many wonderful stories that she has written this book is in a class of it's own. No romance reader should ignore this book. It has it all - romance, intrigue and humour. It is more enjoyable because it doesn't have any of the heavily erotic love-making scenes that can be popular today. 'These Old Shades' is so well written that it doesn't need to rely on them. It is, purely and simply, a romance story in its truest form.In several ways Barbara Cartland's 'Love Me For Ever' is very similar to 'These Old Shades' - runaway meets cycnical Duke, is briefly disguised as his page, calls him Monseigner and becomes his ward. 'Love Me For Ever' is one of my favourite Barbara Cartland stories, but 'These Old Shades' has more depth and the characters, Justin, Duke of Avon and Leon/Leonie, and even the supporting characters are much stronger. Please read 'These Old Shades'if you get a chance. You won't be sorry.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. A masque of lace and steel By Brett Evill This is one of the landmarks in the Heyer canon: the most extravagant and adventurous of her romances. Set forty years before the Regency novels for which Heyer is most famous, 'These Old Shades' forms a series with 'Devil's Cub' and 'An Infamous Army', which relate the adventures of later generations of the Alastair family. (A Heyer afficionado may also detect a connection with the inferior 'The Black Moth', set yet earlier.)In 'These Old Shades' the Duke of Avon (the most ruthless and sinister of Heyer's heroes) pursues a passion for vengeance and Titian hair, and ends up catching the most flamboyant and daring of her heroines.Read 'A Civil Contract' for a lyrical love-story, 'The Convenient Marriage' for clever dialogue: and 'These Old Shades' for adventure.
