A Gothic thriller and captivating love story set in Civil War Mississippi   Seventeen-year-old Violet Dancey has been left at home in Mississippi with a laudanum-addicted stepmother and love-crazed stepsister while her father fights in the war—a war that has already claimed her twin brother. When she comes across a severely injured Union soldier lying in an abandoned lodge deep in the woods, things begin to change. Thomas is the enemy—one of the men who might have killed her own brother—and yet she’s drawn to him. But Violet isn’t Thomas’s only visitor. Someone has been tending to his wounds—keeping him alive—and it becomes chillingly clear that this care hasn’t been out of compassion. Against the dangers of war and threatening powers of voodoo, Violet fights to protect her home, her family, and the man she’s begun to love.   “An exciting story—juicy, romantic and at times quite chilling.” —BookPage   “An atmospheric story in which darkness houses mysteries, [with] rich imagery and imaginative subplots.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Compelling. . . . There’s a languid ease to the prose that invites readers to become fully immersed.” —The BulletinFrom the Hardcover edition.

The Mirk and Midnight Hour, by Jane Nickerson

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Violet's life is already in turmoil after her brother dies fighting for the South in the War Between the States, but now things have been completely upended: two distant cousins are coming to stay for the summer, and her father has remarried, bringing his new wife and her daughter into their home, then leaving for the war himself. But when Violet and her younger cousin discover Thomas, a wounded Union soldier holed up in a ruin deep in the woods, things become really complicated. Nickerson retold the Bluebeard story in Strands of Bronze and Gold (Knopf, 2013), and here she recrafts the ballad of Tam Lin, setting it in Mississippi during the Civil War. Her tale is strikingly atmospheric: Violet's summer feels languid and sticky with brief moments of lightness and respite during her visits to Thomas (with whom she is falling in love despite herself). Through it all, a thrumming drumbeat of danger grows louder until reaching the wild conclusion. But while Nickerson makes the most of the setting with the book's mood, it's also her story's Achilles heel. The treatment of race is problematic: Violet's family's slave, Laney, is referred to as a "servant" and promises she won't leave, since her family and Violet's are linked. The villains are also the shadowy VanZeldts, who practice a mix of hoodoo and snake worship they learned in Africa. Fans of Nancy Werlin's Impossible (Dial, 2008), dark faeries, magical realism, historical fantasy, and star-crossed love will find plenty to enjoy here.—Gretchen Kolderup, New York Public Library

Review Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, February 2014:"There’s a languid ease to the prose that invites readers to become fully immersed in the sweltering heat of a Mississippi summer, and Nickerson paints a picture of the Southern landscape that is rustic but ethereal and at times, eerie."Publishers Weekly, January 13, 2014:"Tomboyish Violet’s interactions with Seeley and the Union soldier are charming."Kirkus Reviews, February 1, 2014:"Far from the typical Civil War romance...[w]ith rich imagery and imaginative subplots driving the storyline."BookPage:"An exciting story—juicy, romantic and at times quite chilling."From the Hardcover edition.

This novel was an amazing, descriptive, richly written novel full of paranormal fantasy, sweet romance, and dramatic historical fiction. It was a romance set in the Civil War, with a slight touch of fantasy, and quickly became one of my favorite novels of the year. It was interesting, unique, and full of depth. A novel people of all ages will enjoy.A Southern girl. A wounded soldier. A chilling force deep in the forest. All collide at night’s darkest hour.Seventeen-year-old Violet Dancey has been left at home in Mississippi with a laudanum-addicted stepmother and love-crazed stepsister while her father fights in the war—a war that has already claimed her twin brother. When she comes across a severely injured Union soldier lying in an abandoned lodge deep in the woods, things begin to change. Thomas is the enemy—one of the men who might have killed her own brother—and yet she's drawn to him. But Violet isn't Thomas's only visitor; someone has been tending to his wounds—keeping him alive—and it becomes chillingly clear that this care hasn't been out of compassion.Against the dangers of war and ominous powers of voodoo, Violet must fight to protect her home and the people she loves. From the author of Strands of Bronze and Gold comes a haunting love story and suspenseful thriller based on the ancient fairy tale of “Tam Lin.” -From Amazon.comThe plot of this novel was very interesting. I'll be honest, I haven't read many historical novels this year (let alone ever) but this novel seriously renewed my love for historical novels. This is a perfect example of one of those historical novels that is educating without becoming boring or disinteresting. This novel keeps the action coming and keeps you turning pages way into the night. The setting of the Civil War is highly addicting, what with the hoop skirts and frilly dresses for the female readers, and the background of the war and fighting for male readers. Overall, anyone can read this novel and enjoy it tremendously. It was interesting, funny, dramatic, and simply a delight to read. The characters were all unique and interesting to read from. They all mingled together in this wonderful story without a hitch. The main character, Violet, over time became an independent woman, and found her own way as she was forced with many hardships and difficulties. It was very easy to relate to her. I personally fell on love with Thomas's character. He was strong, protective, handsome, and brave, and I think all reader will connect with him and Violet. The writing in this novel was spectacular. It was erudite and interesting, and matched the plot and tone of the novel perfectly. The writing was very original and simple. It made me feel like the author writes true, writes from her heart, because this novel does not seem fake or put-on in any way. That is one of the best things of this novel. The trueness and simplicity of the writing. It flows, it's interesting, and one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read.Overall, this novel was thoughtful, interesting, romantic, dramatic, and just simply amazing. I loved the topic of the Civil War, especially the southern viewpoint and setting of the novel. I also loved th insightful characters, the interesting plot, perfect dialogue, and true writing. Put all of those things together and you have an amazing novel sure to delight readers of all kinds. I definitely recommend this novel to everyone.

"Legendary" story full of mystery and intrigue By Ashlee Carter After reading Strands, I was counting the days to the second Nickerson book release and it was well worth the wait! The old South setting and story based on the legend of Tam Lin set the stage for an intriguing tale full of both mystery and romance. I most enjoyed Nickerson’s development of the teenage protagonist, Violet, a civil war era Southerner who befriends slaves and whose heart is put to the test as she learns to accept her new circumstances with a brother just lost to war, father gone to war, spacey stepmother and superficial stepsister. When her cousins Dorian and Seeley enter the story, she again won me over with her love and understanding of the boy and her ability to quickly discern Dorian’s true character. Be aware, the story starts out a bit slow, but the pace picks up a few chapters in and captivates! The love story between Violet and Thomas (an injured Union solder) is perfectly timed, with an interesting twist at the end. The dual antagonists (Dorian and the voodoo-practicing VanZeldts) provide added depth to the story and increase the mystery and suspense. Love Nickerson’s style and am looking forward to the third book.

But you know how you see a car you really like and then you see it everywhere By Tracy @ Cornerfolds I don't remember exactly when I first took notice of The Mirk and Midnight Hour. But you know how you see a car you really like and then you see it everywhere? That's what happened with this book. I wasn't sold on the description because I'm not big on historical fiction... It's also a retelling, which is one of my favorite things ever, but I'd never heard of the fairy tale it's based on. But once I saw the cover I kept seeing it EVERYWHERE! Finally, I just gave in and decided to give it a listen. This is the story of Violet Dancey and her Union soldier, Thomas... and it's a slow one. In fact, the soldier doesn't even come into the picture until halfway through the (really long) book! Despite that, these two characters were very enjoyable, as was the romance.Violet has grown up in the South and has lost her brother to the war already when her father also goes off to fight. She is left with her new stepmother and stepsister, Sunny, along with her cousins unexpected houseguests. Violet is a strong protagonist who stands up for what she believes in and, even more importantly, is not afraid to change her opinions with new information. Thomas is an injured soldier when Violet first meets him and is completely at her mercy. Over a long enough period of time that it doesn't seem unbelievable, they get to know each other and eventually fall in love. Then there are other characters... Sunny is a dimwitted moron who lets people walk all over her while simultaneously being a bully. She is such a doormat that she commits a huge offense against her loved ones that really made me want to slap her in her dumb, blonde face. Dorian is the smooth-talking cousin who you kind of know is no good from the very moment he's introduced. His character is convincingly despicable and he works well within the story as a big bad. The relationship between Sunny and Dorian is infuriating, but it's realistic enough.I felt like the world building in this novel was sufficient, but it definitely could have been better. There was a lot of potential for amazing descriptions with all the different settings within the book. While I was able to picture some of them based on the description provided, there were other things (like the main house) that I never got a clear image of.The story itself was interesting, but it didn't WOW me at all. Like I've already said, it was very slow. Most audiobooks are very quick to listen to, but this one seemed to drag. Honestly, though, I'd say it read about the same as some other historical romance novels I've tried. The voodoo, which I'm guessing somehow tied into the fairy tale this retelling, seemed very strange and never quite explained all the way. I'd actually say that this might have been an even better story without that added element. It honestly just seemed a little strange within what was basically a civil war historical forbidden romance story.I do think that this was still a pretty enjoyable read. Despite being very slow to start, I did like the story. I just think that it could have been better as an original historical romance. This obviously isn't my genre and I was probably just the wrong person to read this in the first place. I'd definitely recommend it to fans of historical romance and (probably) fans of the fairy tale of Tam Lin.

From the shores of the Land of Opportunity, to the immigrants plight of survival...

Mr. Waring looked up at him through his bifocal glasses with a look of quiet resignation. It was as if he knew what Christian wanted to say before he even said it. He began to speak but Christian cut him off before he could say finish. “Mr. Waring, I need my pay, in full, by tonight. My wife is ill, Sir; she is with child, as you know, and the Doctor won’t care for her any further if I don’t have the money. It’s my money, Sir, I have worked for it. I have it coming to me.”

His voice was now getting louder with each blink of Mr. Waring’s expressionless eyes. Nothing within them sparked the notion that his wishes were going to be granted.

Mr. Waring stood to speak. “I can see you’re upset, Christian, and understandably so. But the truth is, I cannot pay you. I haven’t been able to pay anyone for a month. The crash has taken everything from me.”

Mr. Waring’s voice broke as he spoke. Sitting back down at his desk, he put his head in his hands, not able to look up at Christian any further. “For the past few years, I’ve been slowly selling off and replacing items in this home, selling off parts of my business that I could sell, all in hopes that the economy would begin to rise again before I had to let the last of everything of value I had in this world go.”

Still holding his head in his hands, he said again, “Christian, I am so sorry, but there is nothing I am going to be able to do for you.”

In a panic, Christian’s rage caused him to lunge forward slamming his hand on the desk, the adrenaline making his German accent come out very strong, “Nein! That cannot be true! You could sell more furniture! I need to get the medicine. Surely, you can find a way!”

Follow an epic story of love, family and the stregnth of human spirit...

Bootshaus On Frost Lake follows the tale of the Rose family throughout the generations, and the beloved boathouse and surrounding gardens that held them all together. A wonderful rags-to-riches tale, readers will enjoy this story that both captures the imagination and warms the soul.

Sophia's Dilemma (Teen Mayhem) (Volume 2), by K T Bowes

About the Author K T Bowes was born to soldiering parents and moved many times during her childhood. She survived a high school which was more like a young offenders' institution and made it to university. Attending a Welsh university to read English, taught by a Scotsman, K T Bowes achieved a very respectable degree but then allowed her life to go in a completely different direction, starting with law enforcement. She once jumped out of a plane attached to a delicate sheet of silk because a friend asked her to and she married her husband after knowing him only a few weeks, because it seemed like a great idea. Her family emigrated to New Zealand in 2006 on a one way ticket with only a suitcase each. They had no idea where they were going to live or work and it was exciting and terrifying. All 6 of them still live in the North Island although the small children are now grown ups with lives of their own. K T Bowes loves horse riding but keeps falling off and breaking things, so will stick to running from now on. She paints commissioned artworks and loves American Folk Art, which means that much of her furniture is covered in paint and decorations. K T Bowes is the author of 11 bestselling novels.

By Haydn Holdsworth This novel continues the story of Sophia Armitage, the Year 12 girl who goes to the worst school in Hamilton. Her home life is still bad but the bright point in her life is her boyfriend, Dane. During the novel, two accusations are levelled at Dane and sadly one of them is caused by something Sophia does. She has big decisions to make, which will impact both of the teenagers. I enjoyed this novel, it is well written and deals realistically with the issues surrounding teenagers today. I found it a really relaxing read, with some hard hitting points that made me think. I am fascinated by this author and eagerly wait for whatever she brings out next. I rate this novel a solid 9.8/10, definitely worth a read.

A major misunderstanding, problems with friendships, and issues with family add to the drama of the story.K. T. Bowes' Sophia's Dilemma is the sequel to Free from the Tracks and the second book in her Teen Mayhem series. Ms. Bowes is also the author of the Du Rose series. While I enjoy all of her work, Demons on Her Shoulder remains my personal favorite.

I loved this book as much as the first in the series, Free From the Tracks. This book delves deeper into Dane's family life and includes insight into Sophia's dad's situation, too."Poor Maddie went the colour of the red roses in Sophia's garden. Well, not exactly the same, because the roses had dead bits on now that her mother wasn't there to spray them any more..."As illustrated in the quote above, I love the thought processes as Sophia first embraces clichés and other people's ideas, then fits them into her own life and experience to make them unique, just like a real teenager. She's fighting to find herself and her place in life, not something someone's cut out for her.A well-deserved five stars.

But to survive on stage, she’ll need to express herself without the protective shield of snark. She soon discovers being honest with others means being honest with herself, and the truth is; she’s still in love with Michael. But from the looks of Michael’s new girlfriend, Georgia isn’t the only one moving on. Apparently, some people are just better at it than others. And when Michael and his girlfriend join the cast of the fall musical, Georgia finds out that snark and stage fright are the least of her worries.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. thoughts on snark and stage fright By hello-booklover This book had the right amount of funny, snark, seriousness and romance. When Georgie lets her snark flag fly at the parties in the Cape I laughed so hard but when she couldn’t control herself at the most inopportune time I felt so bad for both Micheal and Georgia. This is the tale of two sweet although stubborn people who care for each other but are afraid to say anything to each other after the moment of embarrassment for both of them. This is how they struggle to live apart from each other and still maintain a friendship. You can tell throughout that each wanted to be with the other and Micheal even schemed ways to be around her but she didn’t bite. The snark of Georgia was missed by many of her friends at lunch as she sunk into her own world and didn’t realize things going on around her. When Micheal saves the day for her sister without meaning to Georgia feels affronted and this sets them back. But Micheal is determined and so are their friends. The one friend I felt for was David. Poor guy had no chance with Georgia. He tried though..These two are fun to read about and the tale of them apart and how they handle it is a cute read. The story of the play is great to add into the mix. I am so happy when one finally gets the courage to do what is needed and a Happy ending comes about. Before that though each character is likable. There is just enough sappy in each one with a hint of fun and snark to make the sappy good. The story is a fun quick read that keeps your attention and doesn’t give you too much of the same you see in romances of the past where guy and girl split and we have the romance of ages. Here we see what people go through and their emotions. We see jealousy and plotting to get back together without it really happening when they want it to. We see the love for each other shine through even when each other doesn’t see it. At times Micheal can be judgmental but that is his upbringing and he does learn to control it and Georgia can be snarky at the wrong times but it works out because through all that happened they begin to learn to control it.A truly fun cute quick read of two teens who like each other but because of pride and stubbornness stay apart after a painful separation due to an embarrassing moment for one and mortification for the other. When the happy ending comes you can’t help but smile.

Hernandez I loved this book. It's easily my favorite in the series, and not just because the couple on the cover finally resembles what Georgia and Michael look like in my head. In some ways, this story is very different than the rest of the series, and in other ways, it's familiar. Now that Georgia and Michael are in a relationship, things are anything but smooth sailing. When Michael takes Georgia to his family's beach house on Cape Code for his cousin's wedding, Georgia feels more out of place in his world than ever. Add a hot neighbor who also happens to be a model with designs on Michael, a disapproving grandmother, and a lecherous literary giant with a roaming tongue, and the waters go from rough to stormy. What I love most about this book is the level of angst and the way author, Stephanie Wardrop, keeps it fueling the plot without ever threatening to overpower the story. And also maybe because it's not from the plot of Pride and Prejudice, I didn't know what was coming, which kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next.PlotThe plot is almost entirely about Michael and Georgia's relationship, with almost no subplotting, but it's so well done, it doesn't matter. By now, I adore the characters and I'm invested in their story.CharactersGeorgia is her snarktastic self as she tries to fit into Michael's world, deal with their eventual breakup, and work hard to get over him. The characters, true to themselves, make everything far more difficult by not communicating, making assumptions, and in true Michael/Georgia fashion, wasting time the could be together, not being together.Top Five Things I Loved About Snark and Stage Fright1. Georgia. Her vulnerability and wit mix in hilarious fashion, reminding me why I love her so much.2. Michael. Yeah, there are times I wanted to throttle him, but after he bears his soul in heartbreakingly sweet fashion, he's completely redeemed.3. Diana. The girl you love to hate is completely lovable and impossible to hate. I absolutely love this refreshing take on the romantic rival.4. The kids. All the little von Trapps that Georgia is hired to watch backstage are beyond cute and bring another layer of comic relief.5. Dave. Georgia's friend and potential post-Michael love interest is adorable in his awkwardness, and even though I knew Michael and Georgia belonged together, there was a small part of me pulling for Dave.Bottom LineMy favorite book in the Snark and Circumstance series, it's full of witty dialogue, endearing characters, and angsty drama that all build to a perfectly satisfying conclusion.DisclaimerI was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

She's a seriously talented writer who had me from the first word of the first page. This book was full of so many amazing lines it's hard to choose a favorite. There were things about the main character, Georgiana - or George, that were vastly different from me - I'm not so in-tune with the vegan, PETA lifestyle, for one - but the core of who she was resonated with me. I'm also a passionate person with a brain-to-mouth filter that malfunctions at inopportune moments. George made me cringe at times, but she also made me laugh, she made me love her.The main premise of the book is the relationship between George and Michael, but just like the reality of high school, the characters are also navigating much larger issues in the midst of it.In all, I enjoyed this book immensely - both the writing and the story. I highly recommend checking out Stephanie Wardrop's writing.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I will be happily purchasing the rest of the author's books now that I've read this one, though!

In one of the darkest times of Britain's post-Arthurian history, seven priestess sisters left Avalon on a sacred mission to do their part to bring peace and safety to the Goddess worshiping people of their country. Each sister has their own royal target to engage and in their own special way, walk the path The Goddess laid before them to protect Her people. In this volume, weapons and battle aficionado Aster goes to Hadrian's Wall to intercept King Urien and his sons who are waging war against the brutal Saxon warlord Aethelfrith. Aethelfrith has cut a bloody and burning swath through Britain and even Saxons are shamed by his vicious, brutal attacks. After months of battle, Aster is sent on a very special mission and that is where her real story begins. In an epic story of love, loss, victory, and compromise, Aster embarks on a high adventure to fulfill the task laid upon her. In the process, she meets a vibrant cast of characters who challenge her beliefs about the people she was taught were her enemies. Return to Avalon...you will be glad you did.

Praise for The Daughters of Avalon from Amazon readers:

Miss Rasbold has a gem here. The book is simple in structure, yet complicated in feel. She makes you fall in love with the characters very quickly, and you can almost feel their pain, smell the flowers, and feel the wind on your face. She draws you in, leaving you wanting for more at the end of the book. I didn't just READ this book, I DEVOURED it! Being of Welsh ancestry, and now a long ago Croned Priestess and quite familar with much of what is involved in the walking of this path, I can easily recommend adding this delightful book to your reading list. You will not be disappointed. If you are a fan of Avalon, Arthur, Excaliber, Merlin..then this is the book for you. A mix of fairy tale, romance, a court intrigue! Ms. Rasbold you made me a happy reader, please keep 'em coming. One of the best books I have read in a long time I highly recommend this book as I was swept away from beginning to end. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!! Katrina Rasbold is a masterful storyteller and I felt like I was in Avalon. If you loved The Mists of Avalon, buy this one. I'm excited to read the next one to see what happens next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book..third in a series. By Arachne Truly enjoying reading this authors books; this is the third book in what I hope will be several more in the series. I admit, I was expecting this to be yet another disappointing book about the times of Avalon, the Arthurian legend, done and redone to the point that I just have to close the book and welp; kind of inspires me to get to writing! But Katrina Rasbold? Is excellent. This book is probably my favorite; so many twists, some dark moments, but also a sense of humor and wit. I would love to sit down and visit with this author; we'd have much to discuss, and share many common interests it seems. Keep 'em coming Katrina; I cant wait till you finish the next one, and the next. If you're into the stories/legends and HER-story of the times of Goddess/Earth Mother times before such things became almost as lost as Avalon itself; you wont be disappointed.

The Author seamlessly transitions from past to future. It allows for the reader to see the story come full circle.Beachwood, NC is your typical American small town. They soon begin to experience strange occurrences, murders, and missing people. We soon see this town is not so typical after all. We follow a group of teens in modern times and learn about the past at the same time. We see how the immortals from other realms become part of th he future and how they are the past of the town.I recommend this book to any fantasy lover. It's great for young adults and adults.
