Frontline Angel: A World War II story set in Philippines of the South Pacific. An historical fiction that weaves a tale of an optimistic, Midwestern woman who joins the United States Army Nurse Corps to help support herself and her family during the Great Depression. In this tropical paradise she feels nothing but blessed; nights of dancing under the stars with handsome young soldiers. Overnight, the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor and then the Pacific Theatre turns her dream assignment into her worst nightmare. Our heroine must quickly adapt in order to survive the harsh, unforgiving climate of the jungle, become a skilled "combat" nurse so close to the frontline, and eventual imprisonment by the enemy. Can she, along with her fellow nurses, the 'Angels of Bataan', find the strength and courage needed to survive such conditions and horror? Can these forgotten heroines of America's history manage to emerge with their spirits unbroken?

It made me want to learn more about these valiant nurses! :) I read it because I love historical romances....I didn't realize I would love the history more than the romance.....and like the author, I wish the angels of Bataan were around to tell us their stories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read! By S. Johnson Never having studied the atrocious treatment of these women, Genevieve's story telling did an amazing job of making life for the military during that time and place come to life for me!

The main character is one tough, inspiring woman. I'm glad that someone told the story of the challenging circumstances these nurses endured during their time of service in the jungle.

Timeless practical advice for here and now By Rosemary Thornton By the time I had read this book, I'd already read countless books and essays on religion and truth and love. This book offered me something extra - and opened my eyes to a wonderful new truth - mainly this - that love is enough.Never having been trained in the social graces, I always felt like a bit of a clutz in social settings such as dinner parties and even simple get-togethers.Drummond makes the point that if you have love - if you can feel and express love - you have it all. So instead of focusing on which fork to use for the shrimp and salad, I started focusing on how much God loved me and everyone around me.And that little simple truth enabled me to feel more at ease in every circumstance and in every situation.Drummond's book is about grace, love, truth, Universal spiritual laws - it's got it all. From little things (like social graces) to big things (like loving our fellow man - irrespective of his lot in life) this book will change your life. This should be required reading for everyone.

Everyone Should Have This Book By Jim Huntington In response to the person who said this book was dangerous because it downplayed faith when compared to Love. Does he/she truly believe Faith is greater than Love??? Think about that! I would say that for once the author of this book had a real grasp on what Jesus stood for and if more people lived their life with the values in this book the world would be a much, much more peaceful and loving place.Too many people get side tracked with worrying about their faith and thinking everyone else needs a strong faith rather than practicing what really matters in life. What really matters to Jesus. In my opinion it's been too much emphasis on faith that has caused most of the problems in this world and not enough emphasis on simply loving your neighbor. The book teaches that it's not just about doing good deeds, but practicing love until it comes natural. In order to know God you must truly feel love flowing through you as a force so powerful you can't help but be profoundly moved.Drummond emphasizes that it takes an incredible amount of effort and time to truly learn how to love in a mature way. In the way God loves. If you practice Love and begin to truly feel Love and see the good you are doing in the world then most certainly a strong faith will follow. The only way to truly know God is to feel love, for God is love. Love comes first and faith second for without love as Paul's said "...if I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love I am nothing."In my humble opinion this book truly is a masterpiece and perhaps the most powerful and beautiful book ever written. Jesus' teachings were simple not complex and if you own this book and follow it's simple teachings you will never need to open your Bible again. Yes, this book is more powerful than the Bible because the church did not corrupt it, and it expresses the simple teachings of Jesus to perfection. To have love in your heart is by far the greatest complement to God for God is love. The only problem is that if everyone had this book and followed its simple teachings it would put the TV evangelists and powerful churches out of business. The teachings of Jesus were simple and they are all you need.

The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond By Angel Heart This book, one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking messages ever written, is intensely practical: it will help you discover how love provides "the solution to many of life's everyday difficulties." It will help you incorporate the Practical Power of Love into every area of your life! It is also a breathtaking glimpse into Christian history. Drummond was a world-renowned 19th century evangelist from Scotland and ministered With Dwight L. Moody. In fact, this book includes a forward by D. L. Moody. This book IS NOT Lengthy SO, is Not hard to read ... but Packed with Spiritual Power. A Great Classic and eloquent book, Based on the "Love Chapter" of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, this timeless book provides life-changing insight into nine components of love: Patience/Kindness/Humility/Generosity/Courtesy/Unselfishness/Good temper/Guilelessness/Sincerity. Yes, Love is God's Supreme gift to us, and it is the noblest object we can desire or achieve. LOVE has the Power to Change Hearts and the World. "But what does it truly Mean to Love? And How does Loving others impact your Own life?" Read this book for these answers. Henry Drummond (1851-1897) Renowned Scottish Evangelist/Author of Many books. Over 12 million copies sold.

When Alice followed the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole, a whole new world opened up for her. For W.R., however, it is the only home he has ever known. He spends his time inventing things to improve the lives of Wonderland’s citizens and making frequent trips through the rabbit hole to Topside, where each trip lands him in a different time period. Nothing larger than the White Rabbit has ever made it down the rabbit hole without being ripped apart by cosmic forces, and no one in Wonderland—not even the Mad Hatter—would be crazy enough to attempt the trip Topside. The pictures, books, cards and figurines W.R. returns with take on life on reaching Wonderland. Mary Ann was the exception. She evolved through W.R.’s fascination with the Device, an electronic trophy from a period in Topside’s 20th century. She was unstable from inception. Now her instability seems to be wreaking changes upon the land. W.R.’s favorite runner beans have failed to reappear on the vine after his last breakfast, as have the Walrus and the Carpenter’s sumptuous oysters. The Duke of Aquatain has suddenly acquired a newfound ambition that seems destined to place W.R. in the center of a royal coup that could cost him his head! When a giant vortex appears on the edges of Wonderland, sucking up everything in its path, W.R. realizes Mary Ann has to be returned to the Device. Unfortunately, after his earlier, cataclysmic failure to stabilize her had her fleeing from him in fear, she is, understandably, reluctant to allow him near her. His search is hampered every step of the way by the machinations of the Duke and the idle whims of the Queen of Hearts. Upsetting either one of them could spell a very nasty end for W.R., but if he cannot capture Mary Ann, Wonderland could cease to exist.

By Khadija Grant If anyone had asked me even yesterday if I would be taking a trip to Wonderland again, I would have said No. I thought the last time I should visit would be to see Johnny Depp. But here I am going down the rabbit hole again. I am surprised and delighted that D.R. Moody is able to capture that Carroll tone so well with a touch of modern harmony. He takes us to a world we think we know so much about – but don't. Then he paints the story as if we are reading a full color picture book. It makes me want to go read the original, he’s captured Carroll's universe so well. I definitely recommend this read!

Mazes that disappoint (delivering frustration and anticlimax at their center), the tedium of trials, paw wringing at every turn, avenging colossi, and when it all gets to be too much, there's always a cup of tea. The plot races along like that runaway train Moody describes, feeling at times like it's headed into weird, bumpy territory but never veering off course. W.R. is a complex, delightful read. Bravo.

You've seen the original story from Alice's perspective and perhaps you've heard it from the outlook of the Mad Hatter? But once you've read it with a White Rabbit's viewpoint you will understand what really lies down that rabbit hole.

The Crimson Gate, by Whitney A. Miller

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—This series installment gives readers a bloody and inventive second look at a world gone awry in the wake of a cult's international takeover. Harlow Wintergreen is a teenager torn between two loves and in hot pursuit of the evil, blood-thirsty goddess Isiris, who has hijacked her appearance and dreams. Now the real Harlow must track Isiris across a violent and virus-riddled world to save her friends and the rest of humanity before the apocalypse arrives and Isiris remakes the world in her own horrific image. Miller presents Harlow as an independent female protagonist through two temporally alternating narratives, one set "before" Harlow's push past the titular gate and one set "after." The effect is slightly jarring but in keeping with the overall atmosphere, expertly creating additional suspense. Although the story does prominently feature a love triangle, the protagonist's internal and external struggle with it is a refreshing departure from the genre's norm. Those who can tolerate torture scenes and a certain level of gore will enjoy this novel. Although this book isn't recommended for the squeamish, fans of The Walking Dead who wish for more world travel and cult conspiracies will likely be pleased. VERDICT A lush and grisly apocalyptic adventure across several continents and worlds.—Emily Grace Le May, Mt. Pleasant Library - Providence Community Library, RI

By Stephanie Ward 'The Crimson Gate' is an exciting sequel in a gripping young adult science fiction/dystopian series. It continues to follow our main character - Harlow - as she attempts to find and stop her evil twin before she wreaks chaos on the world. Harlow's double, Isiris, is acting as Harlow and was just named the Matriarch of VisionCrest - a very powerful religious group that her father had led. Isiris is taking advantage of her new position within the organization and plans to unleash a supervirus that will kill all the members of VisionCrest and erase all traces of the group's existence. Harlow must find a way to escape the temple she's being held captive in, and then she has to find the Resistance - all before Isiris' plans are acted out.Just like the first book in the series, this installment was a phenomenal mix of several different genres, specifically dystopias and thrillers. The plot picks up pretty much where the first book stopped, which made it easier for me to fall back inside the world the author created and to experience the story alongside Harlow. The story continued to be very original and hard to describe. Harlow continues to be a fantastic main character, even with her obvious flaws, but she also is a devoted friend and daughter who will fight for what she believes in and will do whatever it takes to make everything right. She's very smart, strong - both emotionally and physically, and she's willing to risk her own life for everyone - from the people of VisionCrest to the general population of her land. I found the rest of the characters to be well written, if not a bit predictable at times. Isiris proves to be a worthy adversary with strength, intelligence, and a plan of her own. Aside from these small predictabilities, the rest of the story was well written with tons of suspense and twists, which will keep readers on their toes. The author wrote with great attention to detail, vivid imagery, and a fast pace, which kept me eagerly reading to see what was going to happen next. Overall, this was a unique and fascinating sequel that fans of several genres will enjoy getting their hands on - highly recommended!Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

A love square and a cult!Opening Sentence: “Before.”The Review:The Crimson Gate picks up right after The Violet Hour ends, so on that note I would suggest you pick up the first book before reading The Crimson Gate. Otherwise, you will have no clue what is going on. Harlow was just a girl who heard voices, it turns out that voice was Isiris who is like a goddess, maybe, still unsure, but she is also a dead ringer for Harlow. So Isiris leaves Harlow trapped in the temple and takes Harlow’s place.Isiris then plans to destroy the world and kill everyone and it is up to Harlow to stop her. Harlow begins to work with Hayes and the Resistance to beat Isiris. Harlow shared a kiss with Hayes in book despite her love for Adam, hence why I said love square because in the Crimson Gate, Adam is with Isiris and Harlow is sort of with Hayes. It’s all a little confusing.I wanted to really like this book, but I found the first book confusing. This one wasn’t much better. A lot of interesting elements but no real clarity on what is going on, for example is Isiris a goddess or does she just have some kind of magic? Harlow gets a taste of this power in the book but why does she have Isiris’ power? Just more questions raised than are ever answered. Plus, the love square, although I did like Hayes quite a bit more than Adam, and by the end of this book I firmly wasn’t in the Adam camp.I am not sure why Isiris and Harlow looked so much alike either, Harlow referred to her as her doppelganger and the synopsis refers to them as twins, but that is never really explained. I think I would have enjoyed these books if everything was a lot clearer. If the world building was better and I could understand what was going on.Notable Scenes:“In my gut I knew it was something terrible and I was going to have no choice but to face it.”“I tried to imagine a way this could all play out to a happy ending.”“And after that I was going to get the hell out of here and go kick some doppelganging ass.”FTC Advisory: Flux Publishing provided me with a copy of The Crimson Gate. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

By Martita The story is a story about a Little Mermaid in a dark dull and gloomy post-war world where everybody's struggilng with their everyday lives. From the very beginning there is an overwhelming feeling that this story has no happy ending, yet, there is still hope that Syrenka will make her dreams come true and the Prince will love her. However, this is not a love story, but a story about people themselves. About any human being who is struggling with his/her imperfections and is ready to sacrifice something important and precious to get something that they feel they need more than any other thing. The lesson is that one should learn to appreciate what they have and not what they have lost- there is no sense in changing yourself for somebody to love you, because they should love you just the way you are.I loved it and read it in one breath. Thank you! I want more! ;)

I thought about the story for several days before I attempted to write this review and could not decide whether to give this book a two star or three star rating because of my unhappiness with the ending, I decided to split the difference and rate the book 2.5. I doubt that I will read anything else from this author.

It honestly had the feel of the original Grimm tales, which I adore. I started reading it and was going to just read half, finish the other half later, but I ended up reading the whole thing. I could easily read a dozen more stories done like this.

From Origins picks up pretty quickly after the previous book leaves off By Brittany @ Spare Time Book Blog From Origins picks up pretty quickly after the previous book leaves off. We are thrown back into Skylar and Mason's lives. Which have not got any easier since we last saw them. Some huge situation needs to be made and they are about to embark on a journey to the Underworld. This journey will test them. They will not leave the same people. Skaylar can't do it without Mason. They are one in the same and need each other. They gather strength from each other and together they can do great things. We get even more mythology in this one too. Oh, I love Greek mythology and what's better is meeting Hades! Things are about to get intense. Skylar is going to have to choose which path to take. Will she be able to handle her choice?Mason and Skylar are perfect. The writing that depicts their relationship is stunning. They are the perfect couple. Skylar has tried so hard to embrace her life and become what she needs to. Without the help of Mason and their family I don't think she could have accomplished what she has. She has transformed into a very powerful female character and I love that. Will everything she has be enough to help her meet her destiny head on or will the other forces at work keep her from it?The secondary characters are still amazing. They have been a very strong support system for Skylar. She has been through a lot in a very short amount of time. Not the kind of thing your average young adult has to deal with. It's not like graduation or going to college, its way harder. Without them she would be lost.I love this series and Mary Ting has done an amazing job weaving Greek mythology into From Origins! I love Greek mythology and when it is done like this it only strengthens my love for it! Bring on book 4!!

I can’t say how much I loved being back with Skylar, Mason, and the rest of the descendants! Nothing could have prepared me for the depth of mystery and the strength of newly made bonds throughout this amazing journey. From Origins not only took my breath away but it stole my heart with its beautifully enchanting and irresistibly captivating twist to my beloved Greek mythology. As I watched Skylar begin to emerge from her cocoon of transformation, I was in complete awe to see her begin to take hold of who she was born to be. She refused to allow her fear to control her. Instead, she pushed forward with the help and encouragement of Mason who never left her side. She drew strength and hope from their strong, unbreakable love. Mason’s unfailing devotion helped to free Skylar from the nagging doubt she had and gave her the will and the courage to spread her marvelous wings and learn to fly. Throughout this harrowing adventure, Mason learned what it means to truly and completely love someone with no boundaries and no fear. He knows the struggles that Skylar will have to face, and he will do whatever it takes to help her and keep her safe. Will their love prove to be the motivation that Skylar needs to take hold of her destiny, or will the unknown forces working against them bring their plans and their lives to a quick end?In all honesty, I can’t get enough of this brilliantly written and deeply touching story that has made a home forever in my heart. The Greek mythology elements only sweetened the deal for me, but it was the outstanding characters that kept me glued to the pages. They are so very diverse and yet they complement each other perfectly. Skylar has put forth an immense amount of blood, sweat, and tears in order to fulfill the purpose for which she was born. Nothing about her path is easy, but with friends like Nick and Amanda, her amazing boyfriend Mason, and her tight knit family, she finds that she can accomplish anything that is given to her. She has more strength and power inside her then she ever dreamed possible.I will forever be a huge fan of Mary Ting with her endless creativity and boundless heart. The encouragement and hope that flows from these pages is intense and spell-binding. Words are power and their use is crucial and should be guarded and used with care at all times. Her stories reach into your soul and bring forth a light that you never knew was there. Whatever you do, do not miss out on this truly remarkable and incredibly powerful story of overcoming fear and doubt and taking hold of an unknown yet beautiful future.

Awesome Sauce By babyssmile 11 Electrifying Stars but 5 on here.I was given this book for my honest review. We have all heard the saying “from our mouth to gods ears” at some point in our lives. If we take a closer look within the saying we can determine that with each word that we speak or even think that we can define that our words even though thinking that they go unheard is the untruth. For some force in this universe or even some far off land can hear the words that we speak or even don’t speak. It is in our nature to believe in the unknown to believe that there is a greater force somewhere out in the darkest depths of the world that our words in great or even less are heard by someone or some force greater than we know if we all have the strength within ourselves to believe. This is the 3rd book in the Descendants Prophecies Series and needs to be read in orderMason and Skylar (Echo) are back in full force with their continuing journey of finding love within the pages. Finding the keys to keeping the world safe but, also keeping the demons locked within the great beyond. As their journey continues we call upon the last few pages of From Deities we see that turmoil has struck once again and this couple along with their friends must decide what decisions are right and keep upon the path that is decided. As one path leads to another that none are prepared for the split second decisions that Skylar must endure will have to be spot on to save both worlds or let them perish. As one decision comes into play with Hades she must come to one major decision that affects all that are within. Will Skylar make the correct decision to save both worlds? Will she be able to see the unforeseeable and will the decisions and the paths that she partakes be right for all? This is her journey. As one particular path that Skylar partakes upon they say two heads are always better than one. One head will lead the way as the other will just be part of a dream that partakes upon a certainty that has the gods in an uproar to letting the demons out within. However will this ultimate sacrifice be the fulfillment that is needed or will this particular god find it in his true nature to see the unforeseen? As the end comes near we can see that there will never be a total completeness to the paths that Skylar and Mason along with their friends take. As parents partake in the journey with Skylar and her friends in trying to save both worlds they say that a fathers love is the greatest of all gifts that one can have. Love from a parent is unconditional but at the same time gives the love and the strength from within themselves to give us a sense of supernatural ability to carry on with strength that we knowingly do not have within ourselves this is their gift to us.As Mason and Skylar find the path to true happiness within themselves they are also finding that the love that they carry for one another is greatly stronger together but as equally strong apart. When separation occurs this couple must call upon the strength within each to finding their way back to one another at the same time protecting and destroying vultures within the two worlds to finally finding completeness within. This journey is not over by far when another threat comes from within the walls. Fathers always protect their children and so it is said as with Gods that they also have a sense of love for their children. Destroying and protecting is a fathers way and will not be overshadowed even if they are not from our world. To the author: You have created once again and amazing journey within the pages of this amazing read. You have taken another world and brought forth not just imaginary characters but a realness of them that they can walk in our everyday lives and we do not see them nor do we feel them but we do feel a sense of calmness that our world is protected by those of the greatest abilities. Imagination is a powerful sense and you have created a WOW AND AWE factor within your pages. You have created twists and turns at every page that brings out the best and the worst of the Gods but also brought forth great imagery. Major KudosTo the readers: Sit back and get the tissues handy for this journey will have you in major cry factor and screaming factors. You will not be disappointed.Happy Reading

There was a familiar feel in the air. She knew it well, knew exactly by whom that sensation had been provoked. But could it be? Could it really be him? He was the one man who set her soul on fire. He was also the husband who had abandoned her ten years earlier. Her name was Rob MacArthur. At the age of eight, she had married the 15-year-old marquess. Their time together was bliss, a fantasy world where true love and pure hearts were all they knew. He was her champion protector, slayer of all her fears and conqueror over all that could harm her until the day she was exiled from all of Scotland for bearing the devil's flower on her hand, a sure sign of witchery. Now he was back.

Had her dreams come true years after she'd given up on dreams? The marquess' real name was Gordon Cambell, and looking at her he thought his eyes were betraying him. Could this rapturous, voluptuous woman really be the little girl he had left behind? Could their love ever be restored? Would he finally be able to take her back to the highland home where they belonged? Not as long as those bent on destroying her still remained. And they were everywhere!

Rob and Gordon are wonderfully drawn characters and their romance is just that...a romance.Rob B. MacArthur is a little girl that has been wed to non other than Gordon Campbell who just so happens to be heir to a Dukedom. The fact that the bride is eight and the groom fifteen matters not. Rob is easily charmed by her new husband as he has already slayed monsters for her. But, when he leaves without a backward glance she thinks that she has all been but forgotten. Rob has no idea how wrong that assumption is.Gordan returns for his bride. He can't believe how the small girl grew and how beautiful she has become. She is living with her Aunt Keely and he is ready to take her home...back to Scotland where she belongs by his side. He knows that he's hurt her and he wants to make it up to her...he wants to rekindle the feelings that were already present between them ten years earlier. But, there is a bigger problem. Someone wants Rob dead and he will do all that he can in order to see that she remains alive. Problem is...there are too many enemies...and they're all hiding behind masks. Will Gordan be able to tell friend from foe, or will he loose Rob a second time? The way this story opens is priceless...and very important to the relationship that developes between these two people. Ms. Grasso has brought the time period to vivid life and populated this read with very colorful characters. This is one author and one read that I highly recommend.Official Reviewer for Romance Designs

He takes mischevious little Rob under into his heart. Because of an unfortunate birthmark, a devil's flower, Rob is forced to leave Scotland. She is accused of being a witch. However, just as she did when she was a child, Rob could depend on Gordon...forever. Very sweet and passionate. I highly recommend it!

Even though she is supposed to be in love with someone else, the minute she sees the hero she is extremely smitten, and from then on is all about how "tingly" he makes her feel, how devastingly handsome he is, and on and on. By the following morning she cannot seem to remember how the man she loves looks like, because she is too busy remembering how the hero looks and makes her feel. That is another complaint I have, we get very little from the point of view of the hero, especially when he first meets her as a grown woman, other than yes, she is beautiful, there is no insight into him at all. His motivation for not wanting an anulment are vague, at best: his father ordered him to get his bride, no woman can resist him, and the heroine will not be the first. His thoughts are not really about how attracted he is to her, and he rarely (if ever) thinks how lovely she is, or that he at least desires her. She does though, always thinking and yearning about his magnificent physical attributes. This goes on for at least half the story. The heroine is constantly thinking how handsome he is, how she desires him. The hero no so much, most (like 95%) of lustful musings are coming from the heroine not the hero, at least until where I read. By 39% of the story she is hopelessly in love, he does not realize his love until 76%.SPOILER ALERT: And finallly, I hated that he had two children, out of wedlock

Fascinating first novel of Edith Wharton By Arneblaze This just misses being a novella, as it is quite short, but it shows Wharton in her element at the very start of her literary career, it being her first novel. The influence of her friend Henry James' novella, The Aspern Papers, is evident in her story of a young man tempted to sell love letters sent to him by a famous author for whom he did not care, in order to make enough money to marry the woman he loves. The psychological miasma he is thrown into due to his guilt and fear of exposure balance his slow maturation in realizing his betrayal of the woman who loved him first.Superb character study and a fast read - this edition is nicely printed and is most readable.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quick And Enjoyable By Dave_42 "The Touchstone" is Edith Wharton's second book and it was published in 1900. It was also published under the title "A Gift From The Grave". Her previous literary effort was a collection of short stories titled "The Greater Inclination" and this is a longer story, roughly what we would today call a novella. The author takes an interesting premise, and creates an engaging story which is easy to read and flows quickly. The reader doesn't want to put this book down. The premise of the story is that a man (Glennard) of limited means is looking for a way to earn money so that he can afford to marry the woman he loves (Alexa Trent). Earlier in his life, he was loved by Mrs. Aubyn, who has become a famous author and since died. Thus he is in possession of the letters she wrote him, and due to her fame he could publish them, but that would not be proper in his mind, and he feels that he would not be worthy of Alexa Trent if he did such a thing.Of course, the reader immediately knows that he is going to have to do this unthinkable thing, and the interesting part of the story is how it affects Glennard and his relationship with Alexa Trent, and with Flemel, the friend from whom he seeks the advice initially, and who helps him get the letters published. Glennard destroys one relationship, and nearly destroys the other, and often lashes out irrationally when the book is discussed. He is constantly trying to figure out who knows, and who Flemel might have told, and if his wife has figured it out, even when he tries to make it obvious that he has done the deed.It is an interesting story about the turmoil which people go through when circumstances force them to act in a way which they wouldn't ordinarily do. Many people today might not understand why Glennard is even troubled by the idea of publishing the correspondence of someone who has passed on, but it certainly works well for the period in which it was written. This is even better than her first book, though I don't think it merits five stars.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Contemporary - 100 years ahead of its time By A Customer Because I am adapting this novella for Warner Bros as a feature film, I'm interested in hearing what readers have to say about it. This is Wharton's first novella, written at a time when she was still developing her craft as a writer; the story can appear woefully underwritten. Still, the story is mesmerizing and dangerous, a Faustian tale of betrayal, greed and the consequences paid, and the more often I read through it, the more hidden meanings emerge. When you read it, think of the lover who sold Princess Diana's first secrets of their affair to the tabloids, and the consequences since. What ever happened to that man? Perhaps, like Stephen Glennard in "The Touchstone", he has gone mad from guilt, which, ironically enough, might prove he has a conscious after all.

St. Louis Affair: The Adventures of Herbert Falken, by Michael Scheffel

Review Readers' Favorite Gives It 5 StarsIn the city of St. Louis, the Gay Nineties, as the time period is later known, have brought about major changes; a thriving metropolis where trolley cars, carriages, and even automobiles can be seen everywhere. But like many large cities, it has a dark side. A brutally murdered city official is found along the Mississippi River. Former Army Major Herbert Falken, now a private sleuth, is called upon to assist the police in hunting down the killer. Falken's quest for the truth is confounded by dishonesty, duplicity, and betrayal. As the clues are uncovered, each one seems to contradict the other. As the trail leads to unusual sources, friendship, integrity, and honor are stretched to breaking point.  St. Louis Affair: The Adventures of Herbert Falken by Michael Scheffel is a well-written and well designed period thriller set in St. Louis in 1899. I've always been a fan of accurately written period or historical fiction. This book didn't disappoint. The story's main characters have great strength, but also major flaws. The setting of turn of the century St. Louis was expertly done with all the sights and sounds you would associate with that period. The story plot provides many twists and turns, leaving the protagonist searching for a truth that ends up difficult to find. I particularly liked Herbert Falken, a complicated character who struggles with his own internal demons. Overall, I enjoyed the story and the book held my interest throughout. I expect to see Major Falken in new and interesting stories.Reviewed by Paul Johnson for Readers' Favorite

By Jane Set in St Louis in the 1890's ex-military turned private detective Herbert Falken is faced with the mysterious death of a wealthy local businessman, determined to find the guilty party it turns out his biggest obstacle in solving the crime may be himself and his haunted past. The historical element was nicely done, with information about this era seamlessly and naturally slid into the story rather than seeming forced and simply there to prove the author had researched the time they set their novel in, when done in that forced way it is a particular put-off to me, I used to read historical books as a kid but stopped because they often seemed like they just wanted to teach me about a particular era rather than tell me a story set in that era.I loved the start to the book, at first I wasn't sure if it was about the hero, the victim, or the villain, although that was soon sorted out and we started on a journey of getting to know the book's main character Herbert Falken. He was certainly a character with a lot of backstory (something I love in a character!) and I was anxious to find out the source of the nightmares he had and how all the aspects of his past fitted into the man he was now. Everything was explained and it all ended up playing a big part in the story. The mystery itself was well developed, we got to kind of walk side by side with Falken as he worked the case and followed the evidence which led him from one place to another, sometimes in the wrong direction, and then of course, as there should be in any good mystery, there were some twists thrown in, but in the end he found the killer and the case was closed. All in all a well written, nicely flowing story, with flawed and yet likeable characters, a good mystery and a reasonably satisfying ending, although if there was another story about Falken I would love to see him reconnect with Sarah at least as a friend. There was even a bit of humour thrown in, loved Falken's line about why would people pay money for bottled iced tea when they can make their own!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

My new favorite flavor: Orange Herbert By Franz Finklebein Scheffel wastes no time sending the blood on rapid circuits round the track, starting his story in the thick of a prize fight, in which he provides a little insight about the main character’s history, as well as demonstrating his patience and savvy. It’s an intriguing, informative, and brutal lead-in to the story that boosts the reader into the events surrounding the primary conflict of the tale. The main character, one Herbert Falken, is an accomplished warrior at fisticuffs, a soldier, and a detective. The former implies considerable martial skills; his success at the latter implies a good degree of intelligence. Falken is a likable character, a character plagued by a few unpleasant memories that color his experiences somewhat and seemingly make him borderline delusional, but an altogether good guy.I’m not normally a fan of mysteries, but I am a fan of history. The fact that the story had a historical element struck my fancy and, because I’m all but completely ignorant of the latter 1890s in the US, this was an educational tale. As a Chicago Cub fan I felt an undercurrent of loathing for the future home of the Cardinals, but this resentment didn’t affect my opinion of the story. Much.In all, I enjoyed Scheffel’s work. He combined a strong narrative voice with a believable main good guy, threw him into a mystery, and painted a picture of St. Louis that appealed to me. Not to mention Scheffel or someone else put a lot of time and effort into formatting the book—if anyone gets jollies from perusing the interior of a book, this one has to be on your list.

He helps the police with their investigation into the death of Charles Garrett, a local prominent businessman whose body is discovered along the banks of the Mississippi. The story is set in 1899, in St. Louis, a thriving industrial city with a dark side. The author's vivid descriptions bring the bustling metropolis to life and brilliantly conveys the dark seedy side complete with petty crime, gambling dens and brothels. As Falken and his assistant James Westfall conduct their investigation the city is brought to life with the contrast between wealth and poverty clearly depicted.Herbert Falken is an intriguing character. Haunted by his past, he has a vulnerable side and sometimes makes mistakes which makes him a likeable character and one to empathise with. Although memories from his past threaten his judgement, he is determined to get to the truth. The story is well paced with plenty of twists and turns which keep the reader guessing. The secondary characters are also well developed and interesting. Gretchen was particularly interesting, a complex character with many sides.A gripping read which deserves more than five stars. Highly recommended.

A Shattered Heart (Live & Love Series Book 1), by Jenn Leigh

About the Author Jenn Leigh is an Administrative Professional by day and a domestic engineer by night with a splash of author when the time is right. She is married with two children. When not wrangling her kids and people in her profession, Jenn likes to read, write, go to movies and play sports. She plays soccer, volleyball and flag football on a regular basis. Jenn has always had a knack for writing, but admitted to being scared of the process and as a result had tamped down her desire to write until recently. When a story needs to come out, it just makes itself known, and thus started Jenn on her journey to become an author. Her goal is not fame or fortune, just for readers to enjoy the story, just as much as she enjoyed writing it.

Three stars bc for the most part the charachters drew me in and interesting (if not a little played out) plot line...Problem 1. She is ex CEO of a large company at 25? (Doubtful )Problem 2. The plot is way too rushed. On day 2 the charachters have already established a history? Seemed a bit rushed, needed to be stretched out more. Maybe have her in town for a few months before the group of friends start saying things like "this is the first time I have seen her text..." Well this is like the third time (according to the story ) that you have seen her period so....Problem 3. h/H love story too rushed. One minute our hero is brooding and wants nothing to do with the heroine, next minute he cares so deeply for her and wants to play her caretaker? (Maybe author should have waited a few months, before that scene. Had given their relationship more time to evolve).Problem 4. Heroine starts considering the three brothers-like family after three weeks?? Considering her past, I would think she maybe reluctant in letting people in, so as not to get hurt again?? Again this seemed russhed. I feel like it would have been more natural if she was in town for more than a few weeks before she became "family"...Those are my comments so far and I'm at 20%... Just honest feedback... Books has potential but needs more work to be good maybe even great

She published her first Novella, A Shattered Heart, on March 31, 2015 and I have to say it was a great read! She started off by sending me the synopsis for the book and I told her I would LOVE to read it! Well, I am so glad that I did! The Prologue was intriguing and sucked me in immediately! I couldn’t wait to see what happened with Natalie and how her new look on life would play out!Natalie moved to a small town to give herself a new start when she met the Bradley brothers. One of the brothers in particular caught her eye and she began to think that maybe her tragic past wasn’t going to run the rest of her life.Josh loved working in his parents auto shop with his brothers when Natalie comes along and turns his world upside-down. He feels this intense need to protect her (and love her) from anything that comes her way. He gets that chance when Natalie receives a text from an unknown number saying: “Do they know you killed your family?”.Josh, along with the rest of the Bradley Family, work together to keep Natalie safe and to find out who is sending these messages! This story is about a second chance at love after a tragic loss, trust, healing and acceptance.Go get this book! –Katie

I always love stories about family and love triumphing over tragedy, and that's what this was. Josh is the epitome of the protective, alpha male, with an added dose of sweetness. Natalie is struggling with the worst kind of tragedy. Their romance develops as they work together to solve a mystery, one that leads to a surprising element of suspense.I would say that even though this book deals with some heavy topics, it's still a light, romantic read. Whether that's a flaw or a virtue is up to each individual to decide, but I truly enjoyed the story.Looking forward to more from Jenn Leigh!!!

Blue Honor tracks four tightly twining families during the American Civil War. Each member is asked to sacrifice more than their share to see friends and loved ones through the terrible times. The only certainty they have is that nothing will be the same. Emily Conrad is the bookish daughter of a wealthy dairy family from Vermont. Her indulgent father has educated her and bred ideas that aren’t acceptable to her more urbane mother, who thinks Emily needs to settle down with her longtime friend and town philanderer Evan Howell. The outbreak of war frees Emily from these expectations for a time, but a stranger soon arrives after the guns begin to blaze, threatening her plans more than societal conventions ever could. Devoted to the young woman who healed her wounds, Henrietta has become part of the Conrad family, hoping that she may one day see her husband and son again. As a runaway slave, she’s been lucky enough to find this slice of peace in Vermont, but the return of Evan Howell and the man he brings with him portends great change that might see her locked back in irons, if not executed for what she’s done. Evan isn’t as bad as his reputation has made him out to be. He knows his chum Emily will make the best doctor Vermont has ever seen, and he knows he’s not the man to marry her. With a little manipulation, he convinces his commanding officer, Lieutenant Joseph Maynard, to take leave with him and see the beauty of the north. He just doesn’t let on it’s not hillsides and streams he’s setting the man up for. Joseph has both power and privilege as the son of a Baltimore lawyer, but neither can guarantee him the things he wants in life. His commission in the army is likely to lead to death, a sacrifice he was willing to make to end slavery in the States—that was until he saw Emily Conrad. Torn between duty and desire, Joseph struggles to stay standing for that which he once held strong convictions. War weary, they all march on to duty…

About the Author Born in Saratoga Springs, New York, where she continues to reside, K.Williams embarked on a now twenty year career in writing. After a childhood, which consisted of voracious reading and hours of film watching, it was a natural progression to study and work in the arts. K attended the State University of New York at Morrisville, majoring in the Biological Sciences, and then continued with English and Historical studies at the University at Albany (home of the New York State Writer’s Institute) gaining her Bachelor’s Degree. While attending UA, K interned with the 13th Moon Feminist Literary Magazine, bridging her interests in social movements and art. Currently, K has completed the MALS program for Film Studies and Screenwriting at Empire State College (SUNY), and is the 2013-2014 recipient of the Foner Fellowship in Arts and Social Justice. K continues to write and is working on the novels of the Trailokya Trilogy, a work that deals with topics in Domestic Violence and crosses the controversial waters of organized religion and secularism. A sequel to OP-DEC is in the research phase, while the adaptation is being shopped to interested film companies. Excerpts of these and more writings can be found at: www.bluehonor.com.

By Mary Wexler In its’ simplest form Blue Honor is a love story. All the requisites for a fairy tale romance are present. The beautiful young woman, with aspirations of her own independence, meets the dashing young military officer. He appears, seemingly from nowhere, and performs an act of heroism that captures her heart and her mother’s concern. But as beautiful as the love story is, below the surface of the romance is a complex story of coming of age. Blue Honor’s complexity lies in the multitude of evolutions it portrays. The story follows not just the growth of its’ characters, but the growth of a nation and its’ people.Ms. Williams graphically depicts the turmoil and confusion of the Civil War: a young African American woman, discovered almost beaten to death, is nursed back to health by a Northern family; a dashing young Southern officer battles neighbors in his home state, as his ideology lies with the Union. We are shown what a truly strange war it is when countrymen battle one another: dinner with the family one minute; a return to the battlefield the next.Because the extremes of the period are so hard to comprehend, Blue Honor’s vivid imagery is most appreciated. We are settled into a bucolic farm in Vermont one minute, and pulled into a bloody battlefield the next. Also hard to comprehend are the morays and mindsets of the period, but they are woven so gracefully into the lives of the characters that the reader appreciates the depth of their struggles and the enormity of their evolution. This has been my second K. William’s read and both have been an absolute delight. Ms. Williams has the ability to transport the reader into her world and befriend the characters she cares so deeply about. Blue Honor is a definite two thumbs up from me!

A Beautiful Journey Into American History By EliciaHyder Just when I had resigned myself to believe that only the British had good historical fiction, I found Blue Honor. K. Williams does a brilliant job of painting a realistic picture of Civil War America. Throughout the saga, she stays true to the time period in speech and narration, transporting her fortunate readers deep into American history. It was a pleasure to journey through life with this relatable group of characters, to share in their joys, and anguish in their hardships. The blurb for this book does not do it justice. I cannot recommend this book enough.

From the moment I started reading the book I became entranced by the characters. K. Williams draws you into the story with vivid settings. I easily pictured the story and rather enjoyed the personalities of the characters as the story jumped off the pages. I felt I was stepping back in time and was given a real grasp of the complexities and struggles of the Civil War.I've just finished the first 100 pages and cannot wait to get to the next page. I highly recommend this book as someone who thoroughly enjoys K. Williams' books.

Good Money and Bad Men

Outlaw Wes Cavanaugh knows that crime doesn't always pay - at least not much. That's why he and his partner, Mose, are willing to pay Jimmy Stock for information on a job that's guaranteed to pay off big. Jimmy's made a career of selling tips to bandits, but the job he sells Wes - a payroll train about to leave Omaha - requires more than information. It requires a straight shooter who can hit targets from a long distance away, and in the outlaw business even a straight shooter can't be trusted.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Western, Love Story, AND Militia takeover? By Norm Beavers My opinion is negative but I'll be brief. Marcus Galloway is a terrible substitute for the master of his craft, Ralph Compton. This novel included a militia takeover attempt, a love story, and a train robbery; all involving two inept traveling, liberal, gun-show individuals. This "historical" novel revealed the author's extremely liberal feelings about murder and mayhem. He might as well have excluded guns entirely from this novel. This is the third "Compton" adventure written by Galloway, and I hope it's the last. Obviously the publisher doesn't care about quality writing, and I'm glad Signet substituted "Novel" for "Western" on the spine. Now if they will remove Compton's name from the cover I might lower my expectations!Norm

When he was a teen, western novels were they way we could get him to read. So now I have found another author he likes and he still loves to read the westerns. I look for new dates of publication so I don't buy one I have already given him!
