As a self-styled press agent, the audacious Exlee Ellis makes it his business to know who’s doing what, to whom, and why—so he can sell the juicy tidbits to the daily papers of Stout City, Iowa. It’s a living, and as the Depression ravages the nation, that’s no small thing. When Exlee comes up with a tantalizing story about the city’s biggest employer—Pinwheel Coffee—Stout City Sun editor Deacon Lowe knows it might boost circulation and save the floundering paper from doom. But if the story turns out to be a scam—as Deacon fears—the Sun might never recover. It seems that someone is scheming, but who and why? A funny, charming story about life, love, and making the social scene in the 1930s Midwest, the third installment in Brett Perkins’s delightful Stout City series mixes up a fizzy, intoxicating cocktail.

I have read all of the books in the Stout City Series, and have found this author to be an extremely witty storyteller. He is a gifted writer who can cleverly weave an unpredictable tale with interesting and lovable characters. Pinwheel is another example of this author's ability to keep you entertained with humor, fascinating characters, and an interesting story line that wants you to keep reading. His stories are engaging and have made me laugh, cry, and laugh so hard that I cried. If you have not read the rest of the series, I highly recommend for your enjoyment, Zep Decker and Addie Sumner.

It is a very fast and easy read. I'm not familiar with the author's previous works, but I'm going to check them out in hopes they are this creative.

Well done crime noir with humorous moments By DogsMom If you are a fan of gritty crime noir, you will enjoy Brett Perkins work. There is something about Exlee Ellis. No one can quite put their finger on it or describe it, but Exlee is special. In the 1930s times were tough and any opportunity to make some extra money was pounced on.Exlee is both an entrepreneur and an opportunist. He is a deal broker. The main story centers on whether or not there is anything addictive added to Pinwheel coffee. This is historical fiction focusing on the newspaper game. Many local characters are introduced. I would read additional books featuring them. I will read the novel about Addie Sumner soon. The settings and language fit the period wonderfully. It has a steady pace with humorous moments to enjoy. The last details about the coffee were a little anticlimactic. I wished it was a stronger finish. Everything wrapped up nicely but I wished for just a little more. Overall I really liked the book. The author has undeniable talent and imagination. I was pleasantly surprised by the delightful banter between women.I would recommend this to crime and general fiction readers; cozy mystery readers would also appreciate it. I won the book in a Goodreads giveaway. The opinions expressed are 100% my own.
