St Louis was the fourth largest city in America; the crossroads linking East and West; the jewel of the Mississippi River; a thriving industrial metropolis, where dreams came true and great fortunes were made. Yet, the mighty city had a dark side; the hustle and bustle of Industrial Era growth and prosperity masked a ruthless underworld of vice, corruption and murder. When a brutally murdered corpse is found along the Mississippi, Herbert Falken is called upon, once again, to hunt down another black-hearted monster. However, Falken's quest for the truth is confounded by a relentless all-powerful adversary--his own tortured soul. Deceit, treachery and betrayal lay around every corner. Each clue seems to contradict the last; answers spawn new questions. The elusive truth can be uncovered, but what will it cost? Review Readers' Favorite Gives It 5 StarsIn the city of St. Louis, the Gay Nineties, as the time period is later known, have brought about major changes; a thriving metropolis where trolley cars, carriages, and even automobiles can be seen everywhere. But like many large cities, it has a dark side. A brutally murdered city official is found along the Mississippi River. Former Army Major Herbert Falken, now a private sleuth, is called upon to assist the police in hunting down the killer. Falken's quest for the truth is confounded by dishonesty, duplicity, and betrayal. As the clues are uncovered, each one seems to contradict the other. As the trail leads to unusual sources, friendship, integrity, and honor are stretched to breaking point.  St. Louis Affair: The Adventures of Herbert Falken by Michael Scheffel is a well-written and well designed period thriller set in St. Louis in 1899. I've always been a fan of accurately written period or historical fiction. This book didn't disappoint. The story's main characters have great strength, but also major flaws. The setting of turn of the century St. Louis was expertly done with all the sights and sounds you would associate with that period. The story plot provides many twists and turns, leaving the protagonist searching for a truth that ends up difficult to find. I particularly liked Herbert Falken, a complicated character who struggles with his own internal demons. Overall, I enjoyed the story and the book held my interest throughout. I expect to see Major Falken in new and interesting stories.Reviewed by Paul Johnson for Readers' Favorite

By Jane Set in St Louis in the 1890's ex-military turned private detective Herbert Falken is faced with the mysterious death of a wealthy local businessman, determined to find the guilty party it turns out his biggest obstacle in solving the crime may be himself and his haunted past. The historical element was nicely done, with information about this era seamlessly and naturally slid into the story rather than seeming forced and simply there to prove the author had researched the time they set their novel in, when done in that forced way it is a particular put-off to me, I used to read historical books as a kid but stopped because they often seemed like they just wanted to teach me about a particular era rather than tell me a story set in that era.I loved the start to the book, at first I wasn't sure if it was about the hero, the victim, or the villain, although that was soon sorted out and we started on a journey of getting to know the book's main character Herbert Falken. He was certainly a character with a lot of backstory (something I love in a character!) and I was anxious to find out the source of the nightmares he had and how all the aspects of his past fitted into the man he was now. Everything was explained and it all ended up playing a big part in the story. The mystery itself was well developed, we got to kind of walk side by side with Falken as he worked the case and followed the evidence which led him from one place to another, sometimes in the wrong direction, and then of course, as there should be in any good mystery, there were some twists thrown in, but in the end he found the killer and the case was closed. All in all a well written, nicely flowing story, with flawed and yet likeable characters, a good mystery and a reasonably satisfying ending, although if there was another story about Falken I would love to see him reconnect with Sarah at least as a friend. There was even a bit of humour thrown in, loved Falken's line about why would people pay money for bottled iced tea when they can make their own!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

My new favorite flavor: Orange Herbert By Franz Finklebein Scheffel wastes no time sending the blood on rapid circuits round the track, starting his story in the thick of a prize fight, in which he provides a little insight about the main character’s history, as well as demonstrating his patience and savvy. It’s an intriguing, informative, and brutal lead-in to the story that boosts the reader into the events surrounding the primary conflict of the tale. The main character, one Herbert Falken, is an accomplished warrior at fisticuffs, a soldier, and a detective. The former implies considerable martial skills; his success at the latter implies a good degree of intelligence. Falken is a likable character, a character plagued by a few unpleasant memories that color his experiences somewhat and seemingly make him borderline delusional, but an altogether good guy.I’m not normally a fan of mysteries, but I am a fan of history. The fact that the story had a historical element struck my fancy and, because I’m all but completely ignorant of the latter 1890s in the US, this was an educational tale. As a Chicago Cub fan I felt an undercurrent of loathing for the future home of the Cardinals, but this resentment didn’t affect my opinion of the story. Much.In all, I enjoyed Scheffel’s work. He combined a strong narrative voice with a believable main good guy, threw him into a mystery, and painted a picture of St. Louis that appealed to me. Not to mention Scheffel or someone else put a lot of time and effort into formatting the book—if anyone gets jollies from perusing the interior of a book, this one has to be on your list.

He helps the police with their investigation into the death of Charles Garrett, a local prominent businessman whose body is discovered along the banks of the Mississippi. The story is set in 1899, in St. Louis, a thriving industrial city with a dark side. The author's vivid descriptions bring the bustling metropolis to life and brilliantly conveys the dark seedy side complete with petty crime, gambling dens and brothels. As Falken and his assistant James Westfall conduct their investigation the city is brought to life with the contrast between wealth and poverty clearly depicted.Herbert Falken is an intriguing character. Haunted by his past, he has a vulnerable side and sometimes makes mistakes which makes him a likeable character and one to empathise with. Although memories from his past threaten his judgement, he is determined to get to the truth. The story is well paced with plenty of twists and turns which keep the reader guessing. The secondary characters are also well developed and interesting. Gretchen was particularly interesting, a complex character with many sides.A gripping read which deserves more than five stars. Highly recommended.
