Twelve-year-old Alistair Cleary has washed up on shore. But where? It seems to be Aquavania, the magical realm where children create entire worlds from their imagination. There's something wrong, though. The creators have disappeared and the worlds are falling apart. All Alistair wants is to find his friend Fiona Loomis and go home. Easier said than done. Animals made of starlight, a megalomaniacal boy king, and astronauts who peddle riddles are hard enough to outwit, but they're only the beginning. To find Fiona, Alistair must travel from world to world. He must confront the mistakes of his past. And he must face countless monsters, including the soul-stealing stalker that some people call the Riverman, the merciless but misunderstood servant of Aquavania who refers to himself as the Whisper.

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—In this second part of the trilogy, Aquavania, a complex web of worlds, is beset by destruction. The Riverman, also known as the Whisper, is destroying worlds by sucking the souls of their creators when they ask for "an end to it all," tired of their own creations and unable to readapt to the real world. When their souls are captured by the Whisper, the kids go missing in the real, or "solid," world. Readers of the first book will enjoy the layers of history of Aquavania, revealed through creation stories that are interpersed between Alistair's quest to find Fiona and battle the Whisper. Meanwhile, newcomers to the series won't be too far behind (there's plenty of exposition woven skillfully through the first few chapters). Readers will savor the (at times) gruesome encounters with monsters, and the unraveling mystery of who Alistair and Fiona really are. The trilogy explores the dark nature of lies—written, told, and enacted—and the surprising pain of truth. Jealousy, revenge, opportunism, and their consequences, also loom large in the lives of characters, be they swimmers (those able to enter and exit portals into different worlds), daydreamers (those who create the worlds), figments (those beings created by the daydreamers), or ciphers (terrifying creatures molded by the Whisper to destroy). Penning something of a cautionary tale, Starmer has constructed a multitude of worlds here, all tied to power of creation, and the boredom that ultimate power ultimately bestows. VERDICT Ending with a staggering twist, readers adept at navigating this atemporal telling will clamor to get their hands on book three.—Sara Lissa Paulson, The American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City

My review has minor spoilers for the first book, so look away now if you haven't read The Riverman.Still here? You've been warned. I liked The Whisper very much. I also enjoyed The Riverman, but I had a few minor issues with it (for example, I felt that Alistair's voice felt a little too mature for a 12-year-old boy). Those issues disappeared for me after reading The Whisper, and the authors' choices in the first book now make perfect sense to me. The Whisper is very different in tone than the first book. In The Riverman, you're never quite sure until the end whether this is a fantasy novel or the story of a girl with serious issues, just as Alistair is never sure whether Fiona is telling the truth about Aquavania. The Whisper moves the trilogy firmly into fantasy territory. Alistair is now in Aquavania, searching for the missing Fiona, trying to figure out the secrets of this strange world, and dealing with Charlie's betrayal.Aquavania is a fascinating and extremely creepy place. Alistair moves through various worlds in search of Fiona and the Riverman (who is also called the Whisper). He meets other children who are trapped there and various creatures created by the children who made these worlds. Every place he goes creates more questions. He ends up in a version of his real life world that was created by Fiona, and this world is particularly creepy and teaches him a lot about Fiona.I like that this series isn't at all dumbed down for kids. As an adult, I never felt like I was reading a book just for children. These books are recommended for ages 10-14, but they are a bit dark, so they may be more appropriate for kids at the upper end of that range.

I just did not like this book.In preparation for reading "The Whisper," I read the first book in the Riverman trilogy, The Riverman. While I did not particularly enjoy it, it was helpful to be better acquainted with the characters and the "set up" for the series. Given that "The Whisper" contains an odd mix of repetition and vagueness, it may not be necessary to read "The Riverman" to understand the basic idea of "The Whisper," but if you really want a sense of Fiona Loomis, whose absence Alistair is investigating in "The Whisper," it would be better to start at the beginning."The Riverman" contains more violence and sexual innuendo (mostly delivered by the older brother of Alistair's friend Charlie), and the action primarily takes place in the regular world; "The Whisper" is sort of weird and creepy, with the action taking place in what the back cover describes as the "magical realm of Aquavania." I am not sure I would it call it "magical," as that suggests something wonderful, when it is instead a strange and disturbing world, particularly in "The Whisper," where the residents seem unhappy or even tormented. The book goes back and forth in time and place, often revisiting the same events in various characters' lives, and attempts to refer to a creation myth for Aquavania, which becomes tedious and Matrix-like -- without the cleverness. The book itself is physically inviting. The cover illustration is charming but suggests a lighter mood than the book provides. The font used for chapter headings is whimsical. The type in the text of the book was, to me, adequately large and well-spaced and thus easy to read, although not, alas, improving the substance. For those considering "The Whisper," I certainly recommend reading the series in order, and also to try Amazon's "look inside" feature to get a better sense of the contents and whether it is appealing to you.I do not think the typical 10 to 12 year old is the appropriate audience for this series; although the characters are fifth graders, the content might appeal to adults and teens instead.

If you were anything like I was at the end of the first book; you'll be happy to know that More is most definitely what you get in The Whisper, Book 2 of The Riverman Trilogy! If you haven't read the first book, I suggest you start there and then move on to this book. There is only a little of the backstory in the beginning of the book and To me it's not one of those trilogies or series that you can just jump into at any point and find your way.In The Whisper we find twelve year old Alistair Cleary looking for his friend Fiona. But to do that, he's forced to face numerous atrocious monsters of all kind and The Riverman, also known as The Whisper. He needs to battle them, be smarter than they are. Alistair finds himself in Aquavania. It's a magical realm made of worlds that are created entirely from different children's imaginations. These children are now tried of the worlds they've created and once The Riverman steals your soul, they disappear from the real world. In book two, we learn more about Aquavania and it's inhabitants.Alistair is forced to go from world to world to find his friend Fiona. While there fighting monsters, looking for Fiona, and finding out how ugly truth can be and the true horror of lies. Speaking about truth, we also find out the truth about Alistair and Fiona. Looking at your own truths and mistakes you've made can be the hardest of all. There is also a twist at the end that will leave you waiting for the last book.If you liked book one, you'll fly through the pages of book two only to wait for the final installment. I know Aquavania wasn't easy for Alistair, but readers of The Riverman Trilogy will find it easy to spend a little more time there. Enjoy the uniqueness The Whisper will bring to you and your bookshelf!
