Does anyone ever see us for who we really are? Jo Knowles’s revelatory novel of interlocking stories peers behind the scrim as it follows nine teens and one teacher through a seemingly ordinary day. Thanks to a bully in gym class, unpopular Nate suffers a broken finger—the middle one, splinted to flip off the world. It won’t be the last time a middle finger is raised on this day. Dreamer Claire envisions herself sitting in an artsy café, filling a journal, but fate has other plans. One cheerleader dates a closeted basketball star; another questions just how, as a "big girl," she fits in. A group of boys scam drivers for beer money without remorse—or so it seems. Over the course of a single day, these voices and others speak loud and clear about the complex dance that is life in a small town. They resonate in a gritty and unflinching portrayal of a day like any other, with ordinary traumas, heartbreak, and revenge. But on any given day, the line where presentation and perception meet is a tenuous one, so hard to discern. Unless, of course, one looks a little closer—and reads between the lines.

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Knowles's latest novel realistically depicts the intertwined lives of 12 individuals. From high school student to recently graduated new adult to teacher, these personal vignettes are achingly truthful and reveal the secrets and sorrows hidden behind everyday facades. As the stories unfold and the points of view begin to overlap, a complete picture begins to form. The message of the novel is divulged on the last page, bringing the book into tight focus and finally giving teens an "aha" moment. The short story format could tempt reluctant readers, and many young adults will see shadows of themselves in the well-drawn characters. Hand this one to fans of dramatic realistic fiction and those who enjoy slice-of-life novels.—Heather Miller Cover, Homewood Public Library, AL
Review The book proceeds, each new character entering, with his/her realities, dreams and secrets becoming another masterfully woven thread. I want it to be glowing, because this book is amazing, but I want it to be realistic because it's not an easy read in any form. I want to reassure those who think an entire book cannot revolve around one rude gesture; not only does it, this book fleshes out what that gesture means and how its intent may vary. I also want to caution those who think this is just a light-hearted look at The Finger because the issues go so, so much deeper than that. But mostly I want to say...this book is brilliant. You need to read it.The idea of Read Between the Lines is that we're all subject to the one finger salute, but for different reasons and with varying reactions. But Knowles has taken the gesture and woven an entire world around it, highlighting the lives of several high school students, none of whom are defined by giving or getting the finger. In fact, the gesture itself becomes almost an after-thought as we become immersed into the lives and facades of Nathan, Lacy, Dylan, Jack, Grace, Stephen, and Claire (to name a few but not all). What happens inside the head of the kid who gets bullied by everyone, including his father? What does it take to become popular? When do you stop living a lie and come out? How long can you go along with your friends even when you know it's wrong?Over the course of a couple of days, we see what these high school students go through at the hands of those who supposedly love them and those who even sometimes hate them. Each chapter is from a different point of view, yet they all overlap in at least one way, and it's often unexpected. I got fully engrossed in every story and found myself changing opinions about characters as I saw events through different eyes. I loved them all and I hated a few. The best were the honest ones; some make huge changes and some barely register a blip, but all are affected by life, by people, by events, by a finger.I just cannot say enough good things about this book. It's original even if the stories themselves may not be. It's just the way it all works together that is utterly riveting and brilliant. I'm also incredibly jealous that I didn't write it! If you read one book this spring, make it Read Between the Lines. If you don't take my recommendation, I just may have to flip you off myself. Read it!

Lovely and very readable By Trudie Barreras Judging by the recent choices given to me by Amazon on my Vine queue, I appear to have become a “preferred reviewer” for “teenage angst” novels. Although my own teen years are way too far behind me to qualify me (let’s face it, things were VERY different in the 1950’s!) and my high school teaching years are fading rapidly into the mists of the past, I suppose I still have a few insights granted by – if nothing else – experience and maturity.Jo Knowles’ “Read Between the Lines” hinges entirely on the current deplorable cultural pattern of “flipping off” or “giving the finger” to any- and everyone by people of all ages and genders. What sets this novel apart, though, is the way in which she develops a number of different characters of very diverse personality in cleverly done first-person narratives, yet eventually weaves these various threads into a coherent picture of the relationships and interactions between them. She presents each character not only as seen through his or her own eyes, but also as seen from the perspective of one or more of the others. This allows deeper understanding and appreciation of the actual events described in the course of a very eventful day in all their lives. There are a number of traumas, but the only “major tragedy” is the referenced suicide of a teacher that occurred before the narrative begins. While this event tinges the feelings and reactions of several other characters, it is never really incorporated. Other events, such as a heart attack suffered by a parent of one of the characters, or a hit-and-run suffered by another, are non-fatal, and to balance these, several of the young people whose stories are shared seem to be coming into their own sense of self in a very satisfactory way. All in all, this was a lovely and very readable little book.

You can't and that's reason enough not to try and judge someone else even if they are giving you the finger for apparently no reason. Jo Knowles' Read Between the Lines addresses a number of topics, current and relatable through brief glimpses into a day in the life of ten loosely connected lives. Think of it like mini character studies thrown together to make a more rounded whole. Some characters know each other better than others and some are struggling with similar issues. Mainly, though, they're all trying to find their way in the world. This is the type of book that makes you realize that you've been where the characters are, if not all, at least one or two. We can't honestly know how any of us got to one point or another in our lives without first having lived everything. Written in clear prose and digestible character segments, it's a fast read. It's also a powerful one that won't leave you easily if you don't let it.Note: ARC received via Amazon Vine in exchange for a review.
