By Practical Act A short but comprehensive history of the Nez Perce tribe and their interaction with settlers who came to live among them in the 1870s. A story of peaceful coexistence turned into betrayal by a government which failed to understand and respect the rights of all native Americans at the time.

By Master Gunner Rising Thunder is an interesting and tragic story of the Nez Perce tribe in the 1870s. Dan Holland has given us an example of the injustice done to native Americans by the United States government. Of course the U.S. government reflected the will of its white citizens of the time. The story goes on to weave the lives of Red Cloud, a proud and peaceful member of the Nez Perce whose wife and daughter were killed by U.S. soldiers, and Evan Demby, a young white farm boy in Montana whose heart is in the right place. The book ends with Red Cloud and Evan as friends, living in the Indian way.A strength of the book is Dan Holland's masterful descriptions. I felt as though I was right there in the mountains with the Nez Perce. Dan's love for nature - as well as for for the Nez Perce - is evident throughout the book.I anxiously await the next installment in Dan Holland's historical treatment of Red Cloud and Evan Demby's experiences.

By Kay Rising Thunder will appeal to history buffs as Dan Holland is a meticulous historian. His love for the region is evident in his vivid descriptions that will transport readers back to the mountainous West of the 1800s. His characters represent the mindsets of the times and still appeal to the modern reader. Since his main character is an adolescent in this installment of the story, I could see some crossover into the young adult market. The novel is a good read that provokes a good deal of thought about manifest destiny and stewardship of natural resources. About the only negative criticism that I have about the plot is that sometimes Holland overuses foreshadowing, making outcomes a little too predictable in some parts of the story.
